BUG review
This YHA associate is a little more worn than some of the other hostels in town. It does, however, offer probably the only rainy-day activity in National Park Village, an impressive climbing wall with five different grades. There’s also a small shop with snacks and drinks on the premises, which is handy in a town where the only market (at the service station), closes at 7pm. Accommodation is otherwise basic and the layout is kind of a labyrinth but it’s not a bad place overall. Facilities include a hot tub, internet access and a dining room/kitchen area with a log fire.

Stayed here Dec 06. After a long drive to come here and find and old run down hostel with nothing around but empty houses as out of season for skiing was disappointing. Not that we minded the peace and quiet and the scenery is great but the was old, bed sheets well worn and kitchen was dirty. Did not find staff very helpful. Has a massive room full of climbing walls if thats what you like. The best thing about the hostel was the great pub next door!

We stayed here before doing the Tongariro Crossing - I phoned up same day and booked a five bed dorm. Because we were going to turn up after reception closed they left us a note with room details, which worked out well for us. Not sure about security as we never had a key for our 1 night stay. We also used their TC bus, and at 25 bucks return I think it's priced pretty much the same as everyone else, and gives you door to door service. We left our car in their car park and I was happy it would be secure. The room was clean and spacious - one double and three bunks with an ensuite shower/loo. This suited us fine as we were a group of five mates. I slept well, but a couple of the others said they found the bunks a bit hard. The kitchen was large and clean. The staff were friendly and helpful. The view from our dorm on a clear morning was stunning and set the tone for a great day!All in all, it worked out as an ideal place for us because we made a last minute decision to head up from Wellington and do the crossing, and staying at this hostel allowed us to organise this easily. Without a car it would have been a pain. Its location also means that there is nowhere to go out to in the evening - a pro or a con depending on your point of view. Visitors seemed to be a mix of families, groups and individuals, and all very much there to go tramping. At the risk of sounding like an old git, this meant it was free of Kiwi Experience gap year pissheads, which personally I prefer! I would use this hostel again if I planned to tramp in Tongariro National Park.
Pros:
Staff very helpful
Cons:
Poor security - no locks on dorm doors

I stayed in quite a few YHAs around New Zealand and on the whole they were of an excellent standard but this was the exception. It could do with a bit of TLC and some locks on the doors. Having said that, the basic facilities that you expect were all OK and the staff were very helpful. I'm not convinced that their bus service to the Tongariro crossing is the cheapest or most convenient - research alternatives before you get there.
