BUG review
The Crossing Backpackers is situated 6km outside of National Park Village. This hostel is a sprawling property that includes a paintball arena and horse riding barn and stables. It feels more a part of Tongariro National Park than some of the other hostels in town, though the accommodation is definitely on the rustic side. Dormitories and common areas are in simple lodges with painted plywood walls and mismatched, secondhand furniture. There is a movie room with a big projection screen, and a huge outdoor fireplace that used to be part of a long-demolished building. Internet access is available.

About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.

We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.
