BUG review
Koanui is comprised of two buildings. The nicer new building is aimed mostly at short term visitors staying a day or two and the older building is used for travellers working in the vineyards. Both buildings have common areas including TV lounges and kitchens and the old building also has a lounge with a fireplace. There is also internet access including a Wi-Fi (Zenbu, 10c per MB) connection. The long-term guests mean that the dorms in the older building are much messier than the new one. The hostel rents bikes for the bargain price of $10 per day.

This hostel, despite having a very nice, welcoming host, was easily the most run down, unhygenic place I stayed whilst in NZ. The kitchen was filthy and dated, the room was cold, damp and had ants roving up the 4 walls and the shower was covered in mould. Considering the high level of standards, we received elsewhere for the same price, I was shocked that this place is still open for backpackers. (Hostel is mainly for vineyard workers)
Pros:
good atmosphere
Cons:
cold showers sometimes
fusee

Stayed here in mid 2004 and wouldn't stay here again quite simply because of the owners attitude . He seems to have lost the plot with what running an accomodation venue is all about , stomped around turning things off when you are trying to cook , simple questions were met with hostility, Guests seemed to be just a nuisance to him who got in the way of his work .Room was very cold because of timer thing on heater that turns it off after 30 mins . No instructions available for how to work it or turn it back on again when office closed so we just froze . Tried to give feedback to owner on leaving about problems we faced and he just didn't want to know Stay somewhere else is my recommendation
