BUG review
The Barn consists of a main house and a campground near the entrance to the Abel Tasman National Park. The main hostel has a large dormitory with a row of queen-size mattresses laid out side-by-side on a long bunk. The kitchen is relatively clean but poorly maintained, although there is a camp kitchen on the other side of the property as well. It has a cosy veranda with couches and log fire, and an internet room with a few new computers. The bathrooms in the main house are newly renovated and very clean, while the rest of the house is a bit tired. There is a barbecue and laundry, and reception staff are knowledgeable and friendly. You can’t get closer to Abel Tasman, and this is a good choice if you don’t mind sleeping right next to ten other people.

The Barn, Marahau is advertised as the closest accomodation to the Abel Tasman Park. As far as we could see this is true. They only take phone bookings we asked for a triple ROOM, when we arrived it was a tepee. I cant complain about it it was clean and adequate. No bedtime reading though, unless you had a powerful torch. That evening we strolled around the various trails in Marahau through marshlands and forests. We took shelter from the mosquitoes in Park Café. That was an experience; a gypsey/celtic band were playing so it attracted lots of hippy/trippy types. The food looked delicious and they also do packed lunches for trampers.

The hostel is located in an old converted hops barn. The sleeping area is one big communal space. However everyone hangs out in the sitting room by the fireplace, off of the kitchen. Very friendly place, great group of backpackers each night I was there. The owner is absolutely wonderful. Perfect place to stay if you intend to tramp the Abel Tasman track. I walked the trek for about 10 kilometers and took the water taxi back. Its all walking distance to the hostel.
