BUG review
Bumbles Backpackers is right in the centre of town, but it is a poorly maintained hostel. The dorms (some of which are in old motel rooms) are quite dated but they have good mattresses, and the bathrooms are dirty and need serious maintenance. The kitchen is well equipped and tidy, and there is a large TV lounge with heaps of DVDs, a pool table and internet access. They also have a barbecue and laundry. There is not much atmosphere here and security could be a lot better.

Traveled all round New Zealand by bike for 3 months and out of all the hostels on both the north and south islands this was the dirtiest smelliest hostel ive ever been to.

The guests (residents??) were very wierd. Some of the motel rooms looked like perminant homes for some of the people by the looks of them. Residents very abusive towards others in the kitchen making some guests cry for no reason (from my point of view anyway)

The first thing i noticed when we went to our room was the number of ill people in there (there were about 12 beds in the room and a number of them had people in dashing back and forward to the toilet being sick).

while staying here i also succumbed to the same symptoms of dashing to and forth the toilet. It was later diagnosed as giardia(thats from dirty water) at the doctors

Lots of appliances in the kitchen didnt work , many of those that did were filthy and had flies buzzing about. I didnt dare stick anything in the fridge as it had mould growing on the inside walls

the bathrooms were dated but surprisingly clean !

Would only stay here as a last resort. If i did it would be bottled water and eating out.

I have also lodged a formal complaint with the local tourism board there against this hostel on the grounds of it being a health hazzard to those staying there.

Bridge Street Backpackers has had a bit of an identity crisis; there's even a sign outside saying 'Formerly Bumbles'. The place does feel tired and shabby, and the plethora of laminated signs everywhere telling you about everything from the checkout time to when the kitchen gets locked don't exactly make you feel at home.

However, the owner is secretly quite friendly, even if he doesn't seem that way at first, and the location, virtually opposite the bus station, is perfect if you're leaving on an early bus.

Friendly, relaxed and very close to town. The people were great. It's like a home away from home. I wish I could have stayed longer (I'll be back next time for sure!!!)
