BUG review
Nelson’s YHA hostel has a great location and facilities, but it is lacking atmosphere. The dorm rooms have comfortable beds, bedside lights, and some have skylights. Bathrooms are average but very clean, and there are two huge fully-stocked kitchens. Although the kitchens are nice, the dining areas feel a bit bleak. They offer internet access (including wireless) and a full tour desk. There is also a nice outdoor barbecue and a TV lounge with two pianos. They are the only hostel with an infrared sauna, but it costs $10.

Nelson Central YHA is located in the centre of Nelson, and is run by friendly staff. The showers and toilets are shared, but were absolutely spotless when we stayed. The kitchen facilities are also pretty good, and were very clean. The room itself (a double, with one small bed) was very small, with not much space to put your gear. If you have a car, you can park in Buxton Square, just nearby, however this area is notorious for drunken antics, car break-ins, and assaults (ie don't walk through here on a weekend night by yourself). You will also have to move your car early on a Saturday/Sunday as there is a market on those days. Don't let this put you off, the local council & police are trying hard to clean the area up, and the hostel itself is very secure and safe.

I stayed here in November 2002 and had a great experience. My five bed dorm (only one was a bunk bed) had a sitting area, coffee table, solarium window and a sink. The beds were comfy and there was lots of room for packs. It was very quiet and clean and the location is perfect - right in town. The kitchen was spotless with lots of room for your stuff. Tons of free videos to use as well. Book ahead as it's often full.
