BUG review
The yellow, purple, and black house out front is not the most attractive thing in the world, but backpackers stay in a newer wing behind it, set around a courtyard. Main Street Lodge has the most “backpacker” feel of any place in Kaitaia and owners Claire and Allen are knowledgeable about the region. Rooms are simple and clean, and were being renovated when we visited, and there’s a big outdoor barbecue and wood-fired pizza oven. Other facilities include a large kitchen and a TV room. There’s also a Mâori whare on-site that is sometimes used as a cultural centre and a bone-carving workshop. Internet access is available.

About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.

We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.
