BUG review
Hone Heke Lodge is set in an old motel around a gravel courtyard; the place was totally refurbished a few years ago and is still in quite good shape. Rooms are large and all come with a refrigerator. There are indoor and outdoor kitchen facilities and a big, covered outdoor barbecue/dining/hanging out area with a pool table. The TV lounge has a nice big flat screen on the wall; internet and Wi-Fi access is available in a separate lounge. Other facilities include table tennis and a trampoline. Free pick-up is offered from the bus station and a security guard patrols in the evening. It’s generally a hostel for backpackers working in the area, but Hone Heke is cleaner and has a bit more atmosphere than many similar places.

About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.

We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.
