BUG review
Little Earth Lodge is a lovely hostel in a rural setting. It’s right next to the limestone Abbey Caves, 6km from Whangarei town centre. The house was purpose-built with furnishings and décor shipped in from Bali. Animals wander the grounds – chickens provide free-range eggs and a pair of miniature horses, Tom and Jerry, nibble on the grass (the owner calls them his “lawnmowers”). A separate thatched-wall house holds a small kitchen and common room with games, books, and DVDs. Torches and helmets are supplied for exploring the caves and checking out the glow-worms. The owners are really friendly and enthusiastic about the area; overall, this is an excellent, unique, eco-aware hostel with tonnes of atmosphere and charm.

About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.

We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.
