BUG review
The Purple Cow is in a nice timber alpine-style building with stunning views of the lake and mountains. It features a large dining area; a common room with pool table and internet access ($6 per hour), including wireless, and a cinema room where they show free films nightly. Dorms are simple, with en suite bathrooms and plenty of shelving, but the mattresses are thin and uncomfortable. The kitchen is massive and fully stocked, although it is closed for an hour and a half each night for cleaning.

I first visited the Purple Cow in early 2006 and stayed for a few night in one of the back selfcontained units (which ard brand spanking new) and loved it. I then returned a few weeks later for 3months because i loved it so much.

They had just refurbished the kitchen - which is spotless and shiney and had just put up brand new walls throughout the pubic areas. The 'Cow' has a really fresh clean look and they seem to always be cleaning!!!

The Staff are amazingly helpful - no job seems to big or too small and they seem to always find the time for you.

I stayed in a couple of rooms and they were all en-suite

The views are amazing and the proximity to town is perfect, only a couple of minutes walk to the shops but set back far enough to avoid the noise from the bars and cars!

Facilities are great too - and if they don't have it then they find somewhere that does for you

This is the best Backpackers i have stayed in, and i'm deff gonna be going back there

This place was awesome!! Wanaka is totally beautiful, and this backpackers is located right on the lake.

The facilities are fantastic. This kitchen is enormous with stainless steel benches and you even get your own individual food cupboard in the kitchen. Everything is nice and new. You can sit outside on the deck at night and have a drink, or play pool or games inside. It even has a movie room

I couldn't believe how clean this place was, we were given clean sheets and towels in the morning - and for the two nights we stayed I saw the floor vacuumed both mornings. Really impressed!

This place is also a 2min walk to the grocery store, which has lots of cheap food. I would DEFINATELY stay here again.

Purple cow has a wonderful location with lake views. Our room also had lake view. Brightly decorated in shades of orange (no not purple!) the room was pretty spacious and had ensuite bathroom which was a welcome change from the usual shared bathrooms in backpackers. The kitchen was huge and clean. Could use some more utensils though...Good common area with plenty of place to sit and relax.

This was one of the best backpackers we stayed at and we definitely recommend it!

My bf and I stayed here one night in a double room (with bathroom). Staff was SUPER nice and helpful, the kitchen was good (I think they're working on making it bigger). Our room was good, nice to have a bathroom, however the toilet ran all night and I couldn't get it to stop, and then in the morning renovations woke us up (so we didn't get the best nights sleep but nothing too bad.) The TV room was nice, and at 8pm they play a movie. The common area was great, and showed off the amazing lake. The hostel is close to shops (but about a 20min walk to Mt. Iron and the puzzling world.) Over all a good hostel and I would recommend it.

Of all the hostels i stayed - this was the best for the facilities. The 4 bed units out back are brand new with kitchen and ensuite. the back part is very sociable at night. Its got a great t.v room, massive kitchen, very clean and the best view of any hostel. It also has the best location for the lake and town. A top place all around

Purple Cow was one of our favorite hostels in New Zealand. It is situated right by the lake so you have amazing scenery. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean and pretty quiet. And they even gave us ice pops on hot days! We would definitely recommend staying at Purple Cow.

This hostel is friendly, very clean, has good facilities and really nice en-suite bathrooms. It's only 2 minutes away from the Supermarket and town centre. There is a large lounge/dinning area that has windows running the entire length of the room which gives you a stunning view over look the lake and mountains. There is also a great TV room with a big screen and lots of good vids for those chill out days.
