BUG review
This hostel is unexceptional except for the bar and café downstairs. This gives it a good atmosphere, especially when there is live music in the bar. Amenities include a kitchen, laundry, and a tour desk at reception. There is also internet access, including wireless ($5 per hour). The dorms are small, but have wonderfully comfortable beds. However the street side rooms are noisy at night.

this is a lovely place and yes the picture in the entrance on the ceilling is weird but different. got great help from the desk about stuff. Cupboards in the kitchen were not labelled so you have to go through everything to find just the one thing. but the place is big. only one plug outlet in the room but your going to find this in most hostels anyway. showers were great compared to some others that have no power in them what so ever. there's no bar in the hostel but there are a few just up the road from it.
Pros:
Amazing kitchen
Cons:
Not much of an atmosphere

You're staying in a YHA that took over what used to be a nightclub. When you're in the reception area, look up and you'll see some lovely ceiling art. I enjoyed staying here. There really isn't much to do in Invercargill so be prepared to tuck in for the night or sit in the huge lounge and watch television. Great lounge for those who don't want to go out for a big bender. The kitchen was terrific. There is a Pak and Save about ten minutes away so you can cook confidently in this ultra clean kitchen. I was just so impressed with it. It's well designed and kept impeccably spotless.Rooms are large so you won't feel claustrophobic. I know most people prefer staying at other backpackers because of atmosphere but you cannot go wrong here. You'll be safe and you will be well-rested for the remainder of your kiwi adventure.
Pros:
Right in the center of town
Cons:
Unfriendly staff

The location is 5 star. The facilities are pretty good but the atmosphere was blaaah. Great for a nights stopover on the way back from Stewart Island but don't expect a warm welcome.

Quiet, clean with medium-size rooms - we had a double and fared OK with our largish packs.. Bathrooms were nicely appointed - good showers with awesome water pressure. The kitchen was large..

I stayed here for 2 nights in March 2004, as this is where the Stray bus brought us. I must say, that this hostel is probably one of the top 3 I stayed in during my time in NZ. The place is spotless. When our bus driver said you can eat your dinner from the toliet seats he was being serious. The internet is dead fast, there is a good cafe on site, the kitchen is well-sized, and the rooms are nice, as is the TV room. To top it all off, the staff were very helpful too. A nice girl on the reception managed to book a trip to Stewart Island for me and 3 friends, despite some probs on the part of the tour operators.Invercargill is very 70s, if not earlier, but this hostel is very modern. I don't strongly recommend many hostels, but I do this one.

Met some really cool people, most only staying over one night on their way to SI or the Catlins (not much to keep in Invercargill!), however, on my 2 nights there I met people to drink with! Clean hostel with all the facilities and considering it was a YHA associate, the internet was sensibly priced! The cafe downstairs is good too!

This is an excellent hostel, located right in the throbbing (hmmm) centre of Invercargill, with net access and a very good cafe downstairs and 2 floors of rooms upstairs. The rooms themselves are clean and very quiet ( looks like they'e recently been double glazed),with huge squashy comfortable mattresses and the communal facilites are excellent; huge and spotless kitchen with new utensils, 2 TV lounges with Sky, 24 hr net acess upstairs, decent laundry. The staff were very helpful. Can't fault this hostel - whether you'd want to spend a huge amount of time in Invercargill is another matter entirely. Kickin' it aint.

I could not get any sleep there because of the noisy traffic. The boy racers drive past all night.
