BUG review
This hostel is in what appears to be a rundown old schoolhouse, however it was actually purpose-built 20 years ago as a hostel. The dorms are small rooms connected by covered boardwalks, and they have old mattresses. There is a huge common area/kitchen with TV, books and sofas. This would be the best place to hang out, but it’s not altogether inviting. They have internet access ($2 for 15 minutes), laundry facilities and a barbecue. It has a central location.

your on an island with no phone reception which is great. the office was closed when we got there for lunch from 12-1 so went to the Kai Kart for fish and chips best one ever that ive had and ive had a few. the rooms are great cause there might only be two in one room and there nice and warm at night too as there's a radiator in the room. the kitchen was small but had everything just don't expect the cooker to cook for ya do cause you'll be waiting a while for it. shop before ye come to the island as theres only a 4square supermarket with little food and its really expensive. there is a pak'n'save in Invercargill so stock up there. if ye want to drink for the night theres only 1 pub on the island in the hotel and it closes early. otherwise stweart island is the best place to come to.

As lots of local New Zealanders stay here - so they can hike (tramp) on Stewart Island - this hostel had the most "locals" of the 15 I stayed at in NZ. You can get loads of information from the other guests; not so many international tourists. The facilities are rough enough to cope with all the muddy boots, plus stinking & wet clothes.Good kitchen facilities, clean dorms, and helpful staff (thanks Sue). This hostel IS safe for female travellers - unlike some others that may have problems on Stewart Island.
