BUG review
This hostel is in a quiet residential area a few minutes’ walk from town centre. It offers good amenities, including a cosy TV lounge with lots of DVDs (which you must borrow from reception before 8.30pm), internet access ($6 per hour) including Wi-Fi, a nice garden barbecue area, a volleyball court and a tennis court. Facilities are clean and well-maintained and there is a fully-equipped kitchen. The dorms are spacious and have comfortable beds. The building has a bit more character than most YHAs, but it still has that “school holiday” feel and it caters to a more mature crowd than the average backpackers’ hostel. Most people staying here are coming or going from the walking tracks, which gives it a busy atmosphere.

About BUG's hostel reviews

We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.

the kitchen is tidy so get in before the rush as not many hobs in the area. the staff at the reception are very helpfull in what you want to do as like most places the've done it themselves. the room i was staying in was right next to the girls toilets so if someone flushed the toilet during the night you could hear it perfectly. if you want to watch a film you have to get it off reception and make sure you get there before they close too. did day triper to milford sound from here and trust me thats all you need to do. did overnighter in doubthful which was the best one ever and its buffet dinner and breakfast so backpackers trust me you won't eat after doing this best food ye'll have for a while. te anua is a quiet little place otherwise.

We stayed here in Dec 06. We had a twin room which was small but clean. The shower facilites and kitchen were good. There are a lot of tables and chairs in the dining area but not many seats in the lounge but has a nice warm fire. There is also a large TV room. It is well located for shops and the lake.

Reception is open very limited hours but the rooms and bathrooms are clean and the staff (depending on who) can be helpful. They have some nice facilities and some smaller dorm rooms.

This hostel offers superb accomodation at a very reasonable price. For couples the doubles rooms are a cheaper alternative to the local motels. The kitchen is clean and spacious and the the hostel is located in near to the local shops and restaurants.
