BUG review
This place is more of a beach house than a lodge. It has a kitchen, laundry facilities, central heating, internet access with Skype and a large common room with sofas, a TV and log fire. The dorms are clean and spacious with good bunks. They have kayak hire and an excellent location near the beach where sea lions are almost always seen. Surat Bay Lodge is by the sea, around 5½km from Owaka.

It has been a while (october 2000) but is it a great place to stay. Meet the sea lions at breakfast, explore the beach and the dunes and it is a great place to discover the surrounding. Nice & pleasant people!

Unfortunately, I only got to stay at this hostel for one night but I enjoyed every second of it. It is a small, relaxing and quaint place. The best part about it is the beach is literally steps away from the door. You can see sea lions lounging around the beach or just relax and take in the beauty of the Catlins. The hostel runs several tours that allow you to see Penguins, see seals or Kayak. While in the Catlins, I would definately recommend doing the Catlins Coastal Walk. The hostel has a flyer for this as well. Cheers!
