BUG review
The Missing Leg is a small hostel offering basic facilities that include a small kitchen and a main common area with a firplace, a big dining table and a piano. Furnishings and bedding are old and worn and the place could be better maintained, but the hostel has lots of character. It is on the edge of Egmont Village. It's easy to find; just look for the collection of aging bicycles on the fence.

I enjoyed my stay at the missing leg immensely. The owners are very friendly and trusting of their visitors; payment can be posted into a hole in the wall postbox instead of given in person if leaving early. The atmosphere is very relaxed and informal. The owners are more than willing to offer advice on the local area and mountain safety, if required, or just chat with and entertain their guests. The kitchen is well equipped with plates, pans, two stoves, a microwave and cutlery, although small. Guests are invited to make use of the woodburning fire that keeps the place toasty warm (and also heats the hot water which is always hot!!) A small, level campground adjoins the house and is surrounded by flower beds. I think that this hostel is one of my most memorable stays in New Zealand (whilst waiting for good weather to climb Mt. Taranaki). Recommended.
