BUG review
Shoestring Backpackers is a big old wooden hostel south of the town centre that features a lounge with a fireplace, a sun room and balcony, a fully-equipped kitchen and a dining room with a long wooden table. There is also a sauna and a barbecue area outside. Accommodation is in tidy dormitories and comfortable double rooms and there is also a small area for camping.

Great place, we stayed in one of their double rooms in Jan '06. The bed was very comfortable and the sheets were nice and clean.

We only stayed one night due to time but if I'm ever back in the area I'll definitively stay here again!

My mother and I stayed here in the winter and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We were within easy walking distance of the Tasman Sea, the city centre, and Pukakura (sp) Park. The view of Mt. Taranaki from the town was lovely. The lady in charge of the front desk was exceedingly polite, friendly and helpful. We had a delightful time while we were there.

Situated in a quiet residential street, yet only a five minute walk to town. Supermarket, and take-aways close by. A short walk to Puke Kura park, or the race ways. Hostel is clean, lovely hot showers. Lounge area is big and comfortable , has sky tv, and a mini library. Dinning area has a big long table , which is great for meeting other backpackers. Kitchen has every thing you need.

A very clean, comfortable place to stay. Beautiful scenery, great downtown location, staff are very helpful and friendly-went out of their way to help me learn to surf!- nice communal eating area (great for conversation!). Quiet and comfortable.
