BUG review
The Opoutere YHA is a nice little hostel hidden away next to an estuary among native bush and gardens. There are four- and five-share rooms in a house that has a cosy common room with log fire and books. There’s also a big kitchen and dining room. A big 12-bed dorm is in a separate structure, an old school house. Other accommodation includes tent sites and a few double rooms in private cabins. The grounds are quite nice, with a little gazebo and a barbecue, as well as table tennis in a small shed. Guests have free use of kayaks.

Peace and quite in the bush, a great atmosphere, fantastic staff, a lovely feeling. 21 January 2008
Pros:
Kayaks, atmosphere, wildlife, staff, facilities.
Cons:
A bit far from town, and they don't sell blank cds. Not the end of the world though!

After the nightmare of YHA Rotorua, this was a lovely change and a credit to the YHA name. On duty was the ever-cheerful and helpful Rachel, always ready with info and tips and free loans of kayaks and spades for hot water beach. And always ready to sell chocolate from the small but useful shop. There's even an internet terminal out here. There are more fridges than the giant YHA Wellington - plenty of well-equipped kitchen space for everyone.
The cabins are comfortable, even equipped with mosquito-repelling plugs! One of those places you just don't want to leave.

I loved this hostel because it was a comfortable and friendly place. The view was amazing. I really enjoyed taking a canoe out from the hostel. One of my friends who has been to so many places in the world says it is his favourite hostel and I have to agree! At night you can see glow worms along the nearby road. It is in a very beautiful and unspoilt setting. Do go here if you ever have the chance. You will love it if you like quiet places
