BUG review
There’s a very congenial vibe at this large YHA hostel. YHA Taupo is comprised of two buildings; one is set around a small courtyard with a ping-pong table and features a huge kitchen and nice outdoor deck. The other is a smaller house with a volleyball net and spa pool in the yard, as well as space for tents. There are a few small lounge areas. Rooms are relatively clean and some feature en suite bathrooms and hair dryers. Internet and Wi-Fi are available as well. It is not the newest place in town but there’s a good social atmosphere and the staff are very attentive.

Facilitywise more than you would get a big hotel. The only hostel I have ever seen with a gym - great after a big day in the bus! They had free bikes, a spa ( that was clean!) the rooms all were very clean and I saw lots of cleaning going on while there, which is always a good sign. All rooms were also heated (quite important here i think) The kitchens were big with bbqs, rice cookers and lots of coffee machines and stuff you would have at home. The bathroom next to my room was brand new and better than average. But best of all I had one of their "internet Double rooms" which was actually 2 rooms - a bedroom and a lounge attached, ensuite, with my own in-room internet computer ( FREE!!) a tv, dvd, tea & coffee which was excellent value - I tried to extend but they were full - so book ahead if you want a good hostel like this one in Taupo - I doubt you will find better!

This place was sweet as! Real close to everything, view of the mountains to inspire love & poetry -( yes I was drinking) and cool people! My dorm was really clean ( and quiet) with free duvet & sheets & stuff and heated too, plenty of hot water and bathrooms to go round and a coupple of tv rooms to watch movies (they had the biggest selection I've come across) on the 4 bad weather days I was in taupo! Nice hot-tub and we played volleyball and tennis there (in the rain) on their court as well - all in all a great stay with people that understand what travellers want.

Judging from the rating and the previous reviews, I was expecting this to be one of the best hostels I have stayed in but there was little to distinguish it from many other hostels. The walls were too thin and ensuite dorms are not a good idea as you are more likely to get woken up. The communal areas were too small, especially the tv room. The reading room next door was pointless as you could hear the tv as if you were sitting in the tv room. The kitchen was closed from 10am - 12pm which is inconvenient as there was no chance for a late breakfast or early lunch. There wasn't enough lockers in my dorm for each bed and I couldn't lock the one nearest my bed as there was only one side of the bracket attached. Also a light in my room wasn't working, and when I asked to hire a bike I was told they were all broke (not sure how though).

a lovely hostel with good facilities and a 5 minute walk into town - the only gripe is that they lock the kitchen up at around 10pm which is crap when you want to get a drink from the fridge !!

hi, this is the first time i have felt the need to write a review but enjoyed my stay so much at this lovely hostel 2 nights ago i highly reccomend it to all travellers - its not the biggest one in town (but thats better anyway) definately excellent all round facilties like spa and big clean kitchens and lounges and the prices were great $20 for a 4 share dorm which was a nice surprise after Auckland - and if you can't walk from the bus which was only a couple of minutes they will come and get you and give you a free coffee and muffin! - it was so nice!!!

Gorgeous hostel with lovely WARM rooms! (very important in winter) Staff here were really on to it, with some good tips and discounts on stuff. Kitchen was really well epuipped for a backpackers - more like what you'd have at home so that was good and the Hot tub was bliss to soak in with a beer on those cold winters nights! Highly reccomend this place - and the dorms were only $20 even without a YHA card.

this is one of the better hostels that i have stayed in. the kitchen is big and very nice (though it closes at 10pm which is a bit of a pain). the grounds are beautiful with some nice hammocks that make for a great napping spot. one of the great things was the free movie rental, which helped pass the time on the rainy days.

the room itself was okay, but ensuite bathroom and shower made sleeping a little difficult. i woke up everytime someone came into the room, and as soon as people started geting ready in the morning sleep was impossible. other than that it was a great place to stay.

Don't know how the rooms are, but you can put your tent in the garden and use all the facilities (great, clean, enough). It is a little walk away from the centre, but you can see the volcanoes!

Arrived late at night and staff were incredibly helpful and friendly making a room availble to us and coming to get us from the bus station, scored some good discounts on a couple of activities and also some good advice on free stuff in Taupo - really reccomend the walk up the huka (?) falls track and swim in the 'hot' river. We were not charged the non - yha member prices - I don't think they do that at this YHA, so the prices were cheaper than on this web-listing, but highly reccomended - all you could wish for and more for$20 a night! We will definately stay here on our way back up.

I'm not positive that this place was worth the extra money a YHA hostel costs, but the rooms and bathrooms were clean and the facilities were nice, though not always accessable because of the early reception closing times which can vary. Still, it was clean and moderately close to town.
