BUG review
High up on a hill among lush, overflowing gardens, Paekakariki Backpackers offers a range of funky accommodation – shared dorm rooms, en suite double rooms, cabins, even a Mongolian yurt in the backyard. Antique furnishings and cluttered décor give the place a friendly, homely character. Backpackers stay in a small house with a kitchen and a warm little dining area and lounge. There’s a tiny TV alcove and a single PC with internet access. All beds come with colourful mosquito netting – occasionally necessary but also exotically decorative. There are lots of little indoor and outdoor nooks to hang out in and the views over the sea are great. There is just a really good, unique vibe here.
About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.
We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.
Price Dorm bed $25-26 ($22 BBH) Double room $60-68 ($54-60 BBH) Prices are in New Zealand dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.
A very pleasant homelike place to stay, with wonderful views, especially at sunset. Grest hosts who really seem to like their job, and go out of their way to introduce you to other guests. Easy access for visits to Wellington, either by train or a lovely 30 minute drive along the coast.Only drawback is the difficult access up a very steep hill, no good if you have a physical disability of any sort! Definately would recommend, and would return.

Super atmosphere. Warm and friendly - reflective of the small town in which it is nestled.

Very, very laid back please. Clean with friendly owners. Beautiful views of sea and sunset. We loved our stay here (march 2003). Walking distance from fly-by-wire.
