BUG review
Wellington's YHA hostel is a big place with 320 beds over six floors with a good selection of facilities that include two fully-equipped kitchens, several lounges including a quiet reading room with massage chairs, a TV room with a projection screen and a games room with a pool table and there is also a laundry with a view of the harbour. The accommodation is of a high standard and all the four-share dorms have en suite facilities. It is on the corner of Cambridge Terrace and Wakefield Street, right across the road from the New World supermarket.

A great hostel in a great area!!
19 April 2007

Pros: Perfect location, close to pubs, restaurants and just across the street from New World supermarket!
Cons: Rooms are quite small and being a YHA the prices are higher than other hostels

The YHA Wellington City is as close to perfect as you will get!

We stayed in a double room for three nights, the room was very nice and clean (maybe just a bit small). The kitchen (or kitchens as there are two of them) are great and has all the utensils you might need.

Location is awesome as it's just across the street from New World supermarket and just 5min walk from most pubs and restaurants.

This is hostelling in style. Very busy place, but still so clean and rooms all a good size with new everything.

Parking a hire car near to the hostel is a challenge but that's to be expected in a city centre.

Reception staff friendly and bubbly, and hostel is well situated near the bars so lots of nightlife too.

Ten out of ten.

really enjoyed it here. Good communal areas, lucky my room was quiet. Big but excellent facilities. In 4 bed dorm with shower and toilet. Why no soap dispenser in them? Large room and dark at night so no probs there. Great communal and kitchen areas. Pool table. Easy to get in and out. Quite a way from bus station, but so's everything else. Right in the good area to be. Great veiw if harbour if someone would clean the windows. Supermarket right opposite and the pubs on the main street next one up. Need phones in quieter area and I wouldnt use the net there as there are better and cheaper places. All good.

This is the best YHA and one of the best hostels I've stayed in on my RTW trip.

Staff very knowledgable and friendly, plus the location's unbeatable-right across from 24hr supermarket and round the corner from the main bar/club street.

The building has just undergone a big refurb so it's very secure with swipe card entry and new carpets and spotless bathrooms. The eating/lounge area has lovely comfy velvet day beds-very swanky.

Only slight gripe is that it was used by a lot of youth groups or schools and they can be noisy but the noise was contained to the communal areas and not the sleeping areas, and they were all well behaved!

I thought this place was great, and certainly keeping up the good YHA standard.

It was pretty huge, but my 4 bed dorm had a great view of Wellington harbour, one lady at reception had a bit of a joke with me, the TV room fit a lot of people and had good couches, it was across the road from a supermarket open late hours and it sold cheap drinks, there was a $2 shuttle that took me to the ferry to the South Island, and it was only 5-10 mins walk to the city centre shops.

a massive YHA hostel - i must have stayed in the new section my 4 bed dorm was roomy with en-suite bathroom which was great, 24hr facilities which is important to a night owl like me, located in a great position for nightlife, supermaket and museum.

This hostel has decent facilities, but there is no parking and the walls are very thin, so be warned. In addition, Wellington is a very windy city and the windows of our room shook THE ENTIRE NIGHT. The dorm room I stayed in had a bathroom, but I am not at all sure that it had been cleaned recently. The hostel is HUGE with at least 8 floors of rooms and I didn't see anyone cleaning while I was there, but who knows. It could have happened. It wasn't a bad hostel, and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
