BUG review
Franz Josef’s YHA hostel has a warm and cosy atmosphere. Most of the building is very well maintained, although the kitchen is below average for a relatively-new purpose-built YHA. The dorms have thick mattresses and bedside lamps, and the bathrooms are very clean. There is a large sauna that is free to use. The brilliant common room is the perfect place to sit around and socialise. It has a pool table, comfy sofas, a massive stone fireplace and internet access including Wi-Fi ($6 per hour). The hostel has good security, laundry, and helpful staff who can arrange tours for you. The atmosphere is a bit more low-key than the other hostels in Franz Josef.

We stayed here in Dec 06. Quite a large hostel a short walk from a small area of shops and pubs. The staff were helpful and informative. The facilities were good and clean and seemed recently refurbished. We had a double en-suite room which was big enough, and had a good heater in it which you need after a cold day at the glaciers!
Pros:
they even have a sauna!!
Cons:
had to go home..

We were so glad to stay at this place. After marching around on a freezing cold glacier all day, it was so nice to go back to a warm cozy backpackers with clean rooms, a drying room for the wet clothes, and a sauna!! WE LOVE THE SAUNA! It was so fun to sit around in the sauna and chat to the other guests. This place also has a big movie room, excellent kitchen and bathroom facilities, and games/pool table for rainy days (it rains alot in this area!). We enjoyed ourselves so much here, would of loved to stay for longer

I loved this place! The beds were firm, with a large kitchen and lounge area. Friendly staff, 3 mins walk to the main area of town. Would definitely recommended!

I must say this place is superb.Good points - Big kitchen, Friendly & helpful staff, Laundry, Big TV room, Big eating area, Very clean, Close to centre of town. Not so good points - Expensive at 28 NZ dollars for dorm bed, Having to book many days in advanced, They hold many beds back for bus/tour companies which discriminates against independant backpackers.

The refurb has made this hostel a fantastic place to stay. The kitchen is big, good facilties including a really cosy communal area with big sofas and large fire, good TV room, large screen and pleanty of videos for those rainy days (which there are lots of here)! The suna is the pefect recovery after a days hike on the glacier.

I've stayed in quite a few hostels in NZ and would rate this one of the best. Quite recently refurbished and up to a pretty high standard for a YHA.... has sauna, large kitchen and really nice lounge area.
