BUG review
This is a small and lovely hostel with a laid-back atmosphere. The dorms are nicely maintained with tiered wooden bunks and thick comfy duvets. The kitchen is new, fully stocked and immaculate. There is a great dining/common area with log fire, internet access and a panoramic ocean view. Throughout the hostel and in dorms there is beautiful artwork, and they have their own small gallery/shop downstairs. They have laundry facilities, a nice deck with a barbecue that’s perfect for social dinners, and a garden with wonderful enclosed bush baths. It is a 10-minute walk to town, and close to the beach and the glow-worm dell. It has a warm and cosy feel, and staff are extremely amiable.

Lovely smallish hostel. Very clean, friendly and well run. We had a double room with a sea view - close to Hokitika but not in the town, which makes it lovely and peaceful. I'd definitely stay here again if I'm ever out this way again.
Pros:
The cleanliness and view from kitchen, host very helpful!
Cons:
Not all rooms are as great, but still good enough.

The good impression of this hostel started already when booking. As I was asking for advise on restaurants to book for a special evening, the host offered to send a broschure of all that Hokitika had to offer, which promptly arrived to us a few days later. Also when we arrived we had some questions that he happily answered, and when our host didn't knew something he didn't hesitate to call upp the information centre to ask for us. Great Service! My partner and I stayed in the double room called the Penguin, which was more like a hotel suite with an extra room, large bathroom, coffe and tea, etc. The best place we stayed on our travels around the South Island!Only con was that our travel companions was not as lucky with their room. They hade a twin/dorm for only $10 less per night that was "ok". The trouble being the shared bathroom just beside them, as they got a bit disturbed by the toilets flushing during the night. I wished we had stayed another day so that I could try the outdoor bath tubs!
This is one of the best backpacker we stayed at!
The rooms are nice and clean, painted in lively colors and each room has a painting of a local bird done by Kerry, the owner. (Helped us identify them when we saw them later in our trip!!). The kitchen is very well equipped, clean and tidy. Everything that you'll ever need is there, arranged very neatly. Common area is good with plenty of place to sit and relax. The owners, Kerry and Neil are very friendly and gave us good advice on things to see in our short stay. They even lent us their own flashlight for the walk to Glow worm Dell. Oh and Kerry left these amazing brownies for us at night! Thank you Neil and Kerry for making our short stay wonderful.. wish we could've stayed longer!!
