BUG review
Rongo is a great hostel, and a welcome treat for those coming off the Heaphy Track. It is nicely maintained and creatively decorated with local and global art, mostly the product of previous guests, and there is a hallway with graffiti and postcards from around the world. The dorms are clean and spacious, the bathrooms are well maintained, and there is a good kitchen. Outside there is a large barbecue area, hammocks, a fire pit and a fire bath, and a huge cactus garden. There is also internet access (including wireless), an international library. Rongo is also home to the local FM radio station and a cinema room where bands from around the country have gigs. Guests have free use of bicycles. The place has a great vibe, and the staff are friendly and offer plenty of helpful advice on the area’s activities.
About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.
We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.
