BUG Review
Just off the main highway leading to town, Lindel is in a big house and has a family atmosphere. The kitchen is spacious, and the dorms are clean and have good beds. Common areas, including a veranda, fill up with cheerful travellers. Bathrooms are modern and well maintained. They offer free breakfast, a swimming pool, and free use of body boards. Security could be better, but for the price, it is a good bet.

We arrived and tony the owner was waiting for us, which was really good after a 5 hr coach trip! He showed us round and let us settle in. The hostel is perfect, by far the best one we have stayed in, clean, tidy etc. We stayed in a 6 bed dorm, was overall a friendly and modern place. All 3 of us have thouroughly enjoyed our time here. The town is within easy stroling distance, and has everything you would need. The coast walking is brilliant, and we really enjoyed the koala hospital. Would def stay here again.

We called Tony (the hostel owner) from our coach, he kindly picked us up and showed us around the hostel. Our plan was to stay just two nights but we have ended up staying four. We had a great time, went for a long walk along the beaches met some locals down flynns beach and they took us out to see some of port macquarie beautiful views, went whales watching and had a few drinks on saturday night down the irish tavern. Met some more locals that took us out on their helicopter. Maybe we are extremly lucky but we've had the best time. The hostel is in a great location and has a good vibe. The balcony is great for chilling and the kitchen and bathrooms are clean and spacious. The shower is amazing!!! Tony is very approachable and helpful and provides free breakfast and internet as well as free usage of the bikes (depending on lenght of stay). I would highly recommend it to anyone travelling in the area, as hastings river is beautiful for walks and can't wait to see the koala's feed this afternoon.

If you are looking for a good hostel that is reasonably priced and within good reach of all the things to see and do in Port Macqaurie then this is the hostel for you. You are collected from the coach stop by the owner himself, which gives you a very friendly and personal feeling on your arrival. He will be honest with you and tell you all you need to know about the area etc. The facilities are clean and tidy and set in an older style building. There is free breakfast, tea & coffee and internet which all helps when your backpacking. So if you are looking for a fun, small & personal hostel then go to Port Macqaurie Backpackers.

I stayed here with my boyfriend for 2 nights in June 2008 and we had an excellent time here. The hostel is a great size, not crowded at all. We stayed in a double room which was very clean. I am surprised at people who have said the place was dirty because that was not true for us at all, the place is spotless, cleaned daily and the bedlinen changed every time someone moves out. There is free breakfast, free internet and a 'Name that tune' contest every day where you can win money. The owner/manager, Tony couldn't have been more helpful, telling you absolutely everything you need to know and gives lifts whenever needed. I would reccommend anyone to stay here, the atmosphere is superb.

I stayed at this hostel once before and those owners were very nice. The current owner is very manipulative, rude and aggressive toward anyone he doesn't like. He hits on the women and is hostile towards guys unless they suck up to him! He was rude and dismissive toward me and attemped to humiliate me, which I wouldn't tolerate! I caution anyone against staying at this hostel unless you enjoy bieng abused and pushed around.

Hostel Manager's Right of Reply

When a late 50s man asks for a mixed dorm it sets off alarm bells for an owner. After showing him around the hostel I found him standing outside the girls toilets peering in. I told him where the mens was, and got no response, after the third time peering in I told him where the mens toilets was once more and he started telling me that he was "orienteering". I told him there was no need to be "orienteering" around the girls toilets. He then started abusing me so he was asked to leave the hostel.

The hostel despite being in need of some work is a really relaxed place to stay and although there is very little security i wasn't concerned about this. Tony the manager can seem abit unapproachable and definately seems to favour the female clientel but he is a character.

I really enjoyed how you got to know everyone and the balcony at the front is a great place to hang out. The pool and free internet are also great selling points. If you choose to go here then as long as you know what to expect and take tony with a pinch of salt you'll enjoy your stay.

I would definately go back if I was to stay in Port MacQuarie

We stayed at this hostel as a stopover on the way down to Sydney - this fact obviously made us not worth bothering with to the manager. He picked us up but once he discovered we were only there a night he gave us the "midnight tour" which basically meant he just showed us where the toilets were and nothing else. He didn't even tell us how to access the free internet which we overheard his telling others about! He was very rude, unhelpful and makes you feel like you're an inconvenience to him! You are made to be off the premises by 1pm the following day. The Sydney bus isn't until 6pm but he offers no sort of luggage storage and just said to us - "tough luck, thats what its like being a backpacker!" This is the first hostel in 3 months that we've found doesn't do storage! He even lied saying there were lockers down at the bus station but when he dropped us off he stated - "there is no greyhound desk but get out of my bus!" Later on we saw him trying to poach people from the bus to stay at his hostel by saying they'd get free internet and that you wouldn't get that at the YHA! Honestly it's not worth the bother! I wish we'd read the reviews on here first and trust us he's very patronising to girls! AVOID this hostel!!!

The midnight tour is what you get when you get off the bus at midnight after being on the bus for 8 hours. It being midnight and you only staying in port for 16 hours and sleeping for 9 of those do you really want to know everything there is to do in town? Instructions for the internet are written on the screen for those who need them, it's not difficult to work out. As for storage, paying for one nights accommodation and staying effectively for two is a favour not a privilege - especially when you are taking facilities away from paying guests.

I don't hit on guests whether they are with boyfriends or not. There are some cockroaches in the town of course - East coast Australia is full of them, but the hostel is sprayed frequently, kept clean and all linen is washed and changed each time it's used.

The hostel is in good condition and thoughtfully renovated. Very cutesy and homey! However the manager is an awful guy, one of those guys who thinks he's really funny but is actually rude and totally unapproachable! And man - Port Macquarie is bug central! Coackroaches everywhere - even on the damn beach! The beaches are totally average and the town is pretty much non-existent. Port Macquarie is a retirement village! Avoid this dump at all costs - what a waste of a stop!

The place itself was nice. Well kept, and clean, but we did NOT like the owner. He was not helpful at all, would not get anything for you (even if really simple) unless reception was open (and even then it was hard to track him down). He was rude to us, our food would always get eaten and thrown away...it was awful! There is a little group of people who have stayed there for a while, and if they like you then you will enjoy your time there, but otherwise they really make you feel like an outcast!!! We tried so hard to be friendly and get along with everyone (especially Tony) but it just didn't happen. Every other hostel we stayed at the staff were so friendly and we partied with everyone there. I would not recommend staying here, we did not enjoy our time here at all...
