Decent value, August 4, 2006
Reviewer: slinky from GA, USA

Pros: Good location, quiet for the most part
Cons: Loud doors, thin mattresses

I stayed in a single room which actually had a double bed/single bed bunk bed configuration (double being on bottom). The mattresses were so thin, I could feel every metal bar under it. I had to pull the single mattress of the upper bunk and pile it on top of the lower one before it was comfortable.

Also the doors don't have have proper hinges on them and this causes them to slam loudly. It's not just one or two doors, but every one in the place. They put signs up about it, but some people don't comply and it can be loud (particularly when combined with the echoing concrete).

The hostel is very clean though and the bathrooms were cleaned at least twice a day from what I could tell. Very friendly staff. Free Internet and wireless (although it was dog slow while I was there).

Place was quiet and the rooms were away from the street. Oh, and it has a great balcony overlooking Alfred Park with a fantasic skyline view. Great for lazing the day away.

Recommended, but I'd be careful of the beds and mattresses if that sort of thing bothers you.

As far as Sydney is concerned this place would have to be one of the best value places in town, based on location alone.

It is located across the street from Prince Alfred Park, which you walk across to get to the city. It is a 5 min walk to central railway station, and about 7 mins walk to the major pubs & clubs in Sydney. With a location like this, it is easy to get pretty much anywhere you need to go.

The hostel has a large communal balcony on the second floor which has an excellent view of the Sydney skyline & the Park. It is a pretty good place to meet other travellers. All in all, this place isnt a party place, families & older couples do stay there, so dont expect to automatically find someone to go out with every night.

Offstreet parking is available, but make sure you get there early as these tend to go quickly during peak times, and they cannot be pre-reserved. (first in, first served) And you DONT want to park on the street, and be constantly moving your car all day. The bathrooms are ok. They probably wont stand up to super strict inspection, but they are very private, and quite bearable. Internet access is available in the lobby. I stayed in a 4 person dorm room which was fairly comfortable, however, it did get a little cramped & stuffy during summer when it was full. All rooms have TV's.

The management is quite friendly & helpful. They are willing to give advice on things to do in Sydney, and will help in booking tours etc.

Given Sydney isnt the cheapest place in the world, Id say this place is one of the better places to stay, and Id recommend it to all.

this was a really nice place, an old victorian house which has a trellace balcony which you can chill out on. the whole place is immaculate and every room has a tv fridge and radio. the new owners are very helpful too. it tends to attract locals and family travellers as well as backpackers so isnt really a party place. theres also a car park

Surprisingly one of the nicest place that I have stayed in considering the cost of staying here is so cheap compare to the other places that I have stayed in. The room and bathroom are clean daily and the staff was very helpful and polite. Close to all tourist attraction and transport

The place has a very nice and pleasant atmosphere.

There is no curfew and everyone seem to get on well. I will be back for sure and will recommened this place to all my friends.

Alfred park situated in beautiful old house! That was the best thing about the hostel! The staff were unhelpful and rude. The bathrooms were not cleaned the whole time we were there and hadn't been cleaned for ages indicated by the scunge in the shower and the ring of around the toilets. the dorms are very cramped and the atmosphere is lacking. Not a good hostel if you need sleep!
