BUG Review
A small hostel upstairs from a good café, Hyde Park is a quiet place. It is currently undergoing renovations, which look promising. Rooms have high ceilings and tall, breezy windows. It is cheerful, if a bit rough around the edges. Bathrooms could be updated, but they are spotlessly clean. The kitchen and common room are very small but sweet, and staff are easy going and kind.

We arrived after a lengthy flight from the UK only to find the hostel from hell!! After eventually tracking down the owner by phone he told us our room was open & the key was under a blanket, we walked into a brothel disguised as a broom cupboard. The room was tiny with a red painted wall & smelly pink bedspread & there was a toenail clipping on the floor so obviously cleanliness was a big issue, there were also porno magazines on the magazine rack. The electrics were coming away from the ceiling & wall, there was no blind in the bathroom so people from the opposite building could see you & the smell from the chinese restaurant downstairs turns your stomach. When we left early, the man acting on behalf of the owner, could not see a problem with any of the issues we raised & proceeded to rip us off bigtime. We do not recommend this hostel to anyone.

After staying in this hostel for a week any other place would seem like a palace. It was tiny and had a very depressing atmosphere. Although clean, the ladies shower room and toilet is practically in the sitting room and there is no room to sit and eat with the sitting room so tiny you could barely swing a cat. On first inspection we thought the kitchen was ok, however after opening the freezer and discovering a large frozen insect we decided to eat out. The owner of this premises seemed to be everwhere we went and continually checking up on us, even to the extent of coming into our room uninvited in the mornings and cornering you in the laundry room. This place was overpriced and although in the centre of town it would be better to find somwehere else for the same or cheaper.

Basic hostels are fine by me but this place abuses the word. Can't recommend it - WAY, WAY too noisy even for a heavy sleeper like me (huge traffic outside), depressing atmosphere, very dull & boring place to be & not very clean & friendly either. No phones on premesis, no change given, $25 is BIG TIME overpriced for this place as well. Stay here if you're going to be out & about lots (literally!) otherwise do yourself a favor & stay at the Wood Duck or Original Backpackers instead & at least get your money's worth.

I only spent a night here, but I was quite fond of the place. The location is great for walking anywhere downtown. The mattresses were solid and comfortable, and the place was, overall, quite clean, and very friendly. It's obviously under renovation, so it's hard to really pass too much judgement on it. There's lots of street noise from Wentworth and Elizabath Streets out front, so a back room is probably a better idea. I used earplugs and slept OK. Recommended based on its location, cleanliness, and niceness of the staff.
