BUG Review
This place really lives up to its name. A funky but inviting reception area leads to staircases and snaking hallways on three floors. The building is quite old and run down, but it has character to spare and feels like home. A big, comfy movie room is usually packed with travellers. The kitchen is nothing extraordinary, and the toilets are aging but kept clean. Dorm rooms are really tiny and bare. Reception staff are energetic and friendly, and always seem to have activities planned. Internet is a relatively cheap $2 per hour.

Price
Dorm bed $27-35 (Nomads $26-24)
Single room $55-57 (Nomads $54-56)

Prices are in Australian dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.

the place is a dump warning HUGE roaches!, July 31, 2008
Reviewer: canadatravel13 from Canada

Pros: it's a huge hostel, so potentially great for meeting people, but then....
Cons: huge roaches, horrible smell, broken beds, dirt and grime, dead rats in random places

I arrived, stayed a few hours before I realized how bad the place was and left. I was lucky that I could afford to pay for another place to stay, most people in my group were not in a position financially to arrange an alternative place to stay. The stories I've compiled are a result of our stay. From the beginning I'd like to say that I've stayed in a lot of hostels, some that matched this place in it's shadiness but never in filthiness. Besides the roaches, the random other bugs and the dead rats we found, there is also a putrid smell in the air. Apparently they call in the exterminators pretty often, although they'll have you try to believe that the fumes in the air are ok for people to breathe. If these things don't bother you maybe your bed breaking under you will. Or the showers flooding. The people in reception laugh in your face when you mention any of the stuff I listed above. Forget getting assistance, they are too understaffed to help. Security is nonexistant. Honestly this place is a dump. I filed a complaint with the health authorities. However, it continues to a have a lot of customers due to the fact that most people have no idea how crappy it is until its too late.

I had a blast here!! It was very friendly and the staff are very knowledgable and willing to help when u do get a bit lost.

Yes it is cheap, but hello, that what BACKPACKING IS ALL ABOUT really isn't it. if you want to be a Poshpacker then that's what hotels are for! You get what you pay for here and all round it is good value. Means more money for sightseeing, local food & BEER! :)

They have LOTS of different activities and free wine too :) (more saving money)

the guys on reception are brilliant and what a hottie the girls who work here are too.

i will deifnitely come back to stay here cos i had so much fun and that's what travelling and adventures are all about

this place was just awful, im backpacking around oz and im not expecting 5*luxury, just clean, safe accomodation. This place was run down, had dodgy characters sat on the front, and had no lockers in the room and a shoddy lock on the door that could easily be broken! had originally booked for 7nights but only stayed the one night as it was that bad! the toilets and showers were filthy, our bed was broken! just an all round bad experience!!!!

on our first night we got bed bugs. the next morning the receptionist moved us rooms but said we must have got them somewhere else. A dirty towel was left in the girls bathroom to soak up excess water. Noise very load in the morning time and the windows do not dull the sound. we also had problem extending our stay as we only had two days left in sydney. if we wanted to stay we had to move rooms again.on the plus side gizmo your a shining light in a dull experience.

I've stayed in a lot of hostels in a lot of countries over the years and I can honestly say that this was the best one I have ever been to for meeting people. The activities guys were fantastic, especially Gizmo, and really made sure people never felt left out. There is often a cliquey feel about hostels that have a lot of longer term guests, but that wasn't present here.

OK, the dorms are not the best in the world (but they definately aren't the worst either!) and the kitchen can sometimes be crowded (in a hostel this large that is unavoidable though) but everywhere else was pretty well maintained and the TV room being 24 hours is a definate bonus.

The central location means that everywhere is walkable and makes getting to know the CBD really easy, only 10 mins from Darling Harbour is a definate bonus in my eyes!

As I said though, this hostel is all about fun. The activities are arranged pretty much every day and you can normally win money off accommodation, Blue Mountains tours and so on. Definately worth doing!

Would I go back? YES, and will be when I get back to Sydney.

Worst hostel i stayed in, March 9, 2006

This was overall THE worst hostel i stayed in. The rooms had no plug sockets so you have to go and give your phone or camara to reception for them to recharge for you. The bathrooms were the worst i had seen. Well the showers were. The toilets weren't too bad. I found the staff to be either completely useless (they couldn't give me a map of the area) and/or Rude. I definately WON'T stay here again!! I will be going back to Sydney and will not be rebooking this place!

The location is great, (shame about the actual hostel) about a 20-25 min walk to Sydney Harbour straight down Pitt Street.

This is the perfect place for people who can

(1) sleep through an earthquake (there is a construction site nearby),

(2) dun mind street noises that wake you up at 5am in the mornings,

(3) live without electricity in the room (you have to charge anything you got at their reception),

(4) stand leaky showers with winter winds blowing into your cubicle when you are bathing,

(5) smile at despairing bare rooms with squeaking beds and

(6) worst of all when you decide you have enough of all these rubbish you CAN'T EVEN GET A BLOODY REFUND!

So open your eyes and check out if you can stand all these nonsense first before you pay for your room. For the prices they are charging, an offer for a free 5th night stay would mean an extra ZOMBIE day in Sydney.

And actually, it doesn't even deserve a single star.

At almost the same price, you can get a 100 times better accommodation at George Street.

It's a hostel, and doesn't pretend to be something it is not. I stayed for a week and found the location to be excellent - smack-bang in the middle of everything. Staff are very, very friendly and NOT pretentious like some other Sydney hostel's I've stayed in!! The hostel makes a great effort in everything and there was always some kind of activity going on, and yeah...the free wine was a winner too!!! Thanks for a wonderful, comfortable, friendly stay! woohoo!!!

I was going to stay here for 6 weeks but ended up only staying 1 night due to the following:

1. Bathrooms very dirty and in need of a good clean.

2. Dark and dreary.

3. Traffic noise was terrible.

4. kitchens were awful, none of the microwaves worked and ended up cooking my curry in a saucepan.

5. Bed linen had holes in it.

6. Had to charge my mobile at reception - very risky

7. Fridges also in need of a good clean.

8. Decor was looking very drab and tatty, needs to be completly re-furbished.

My advice is: DON'T STAY HERE!

Everone for themselves. Your food if left in fridge subject to dissapearance.Noisy but since clients are in 19-30 on the whole is to be expected.Location is ok but not a factor as Sydney has excellent transit. My bed linen not changed unless i contacted staff .I was there a week on arrival in OZ and after 4 months i concluded the Maze not in top 10 of places i stayed at.Staff is revolving door variety.
