Surfside Backpackers has Coogee's best location, upstairs from McDonalds and right across the road from the beach. It is an old building but the penthouse common area is quite nice with a big screen telly, a kitchen and lovely sea views.

The best thing about this hostel is that the beach is a 10 second walk from the hostel. There is also a $5 meal restaurant below the hostel.***EDITED TO COMPLY WITH BUG'S REVIEW GUIDELINES*** is a complete dickhead. He would get pissed almost every night, no....every night, and insult guests. He also likes to book ladies into his own dorm room (as the sado stays there!), if he finds them hot.Compared to other hostels, the prices surfside (or surfshit as we later named it), are charging are ridiculous! theres only 3 male showers for about 50 guests, and the bathrooms arent even clean.We arrived straight from scotland and were trying to overcome jetlag. This wasnt possible though, as music would be played until 7am, with drunk idiots giving us renditions of 'Rythem is a dancer' etc.So, if u want to party EVERY night, stay here. If not, dont bother!
Stayed here at the very start of my travels at the end of november 05. This joint is a fantastic location, thats all it really has going for it. Tony, the guy who runs the place is a complete tosser! Some nights he never even opened up and when new people wanted to check in they couldn't because no one was around. He also preys after single females making sure they are in his room.Most of the residents here are long termers so its hard to mingle especially when they are junkies/alcoholic twats. Rooms are not clean and very cramped. Showers are crap. Its like a maze full of stairs. Its an OK place if you are fortunate enough to find other decent people. I wouldn't stay there again.
