BUG Review
This big hostel is in a nice old Victorian building with 220 beds on three floors. It is very roomy and has a nice wooden railing staircase. The kitchen is large but rather dirty. It has a good social atmosphere and there are plenty of activities going on each day. They also offer free breakfast, which is rare in Sydney. The main TV lounge has a large screen TV but only a couple of old couches in an unventilated room. The rooftop sundeck has great views of the park and St. Mary's Cathedral, and often gathers a good crowd at night. Reception staff are friendly.

Well located just 5 minutes walk to the city centre and 10 mins to the Opera House/Botanic Gardens. You avoid paying premium rates of the centre and miss the seedier areas to the East. Little or no road noise and well lit streets nearby. They will refund your shuttle bus ticket from airport (remember to get a receipt!!). Rooms are secure, using key cards. Excellent tall wardrobes in double rooms - two lockable cupboards. Dbl room basic apart from that - windows open on upper floors and ceiling fan to keep temperatures down. Showers and toilets cleaned regularly when we were there. Kitchen hard to use at meal times but excellent industrial fridges and plenty of utensils in addition to bowl/plate/mug/cutlery which can be obtained at reception for small deposit. Small lounge area popular with TV usually blaring - always seemed to be showing the Simpsons .... somehow. Reception staff always cheerful and tried to help with queries. Hostel arranged variety of activities most nights. Easy to meet people and wide variety of nationalities and age groups. Ideal for genuine travellers wanting a safe, reasonably priced base for Sydney visiting.

I have stayed here twice, (2003 & 2004) and both times found it welcoming, clean, secure, nice large rooms, good facilities, and a very convenient location. i liked the tv lounge, reception were always helpful, and the brekky was generally good (altho if you were late down in the morning, there was sometimes not much left!) The second time I stayed, I was travelling alone, and coz of the good communal rooms I didnt find it hard to meet people. I enjoyed the atmosphere and found it friendly. The reason I havent given it 5 stars was 1) the kitchen appliances have a mind of their own & dont always work, or in in the way you expect, and 2) the washing machines tend to get jammed with coins easily so you can spend (literally) hours trying 2 get the money in or out! One of the nicest hostels Ive stayed in.

Worst hostel I've stayed in. Very dirty and the free breakfast consists of 1 pancake! Hated it.

It is in a convenient location and cheaper than some other hostels in the "CBD". This area is more convenient and not as seedy as those in and around Chinatown. The rooms were a decent size and the staff was attentive and we had pancakes for our free brekky. The only problem I encountered was trying to cook, because the kitchen facilities are just too small for the number of people staying there. It took me almost an hour of waiting time to get an available burner to cook my dinner on. There were only two stove tops with weird burners that didnt work very well. I think if they expanded the kitchen area somewhat to include better and more cooking areas it would help a lot! The bathrooms were good, (individual toilet areas which is nice) but the showers were really dirty at the time I was there. I think if the hostel made a few improvements, it could be a really great place.

This hostel is in a great location,v easy to get into the city centre from here. The rooms are large and all have lockable cupboards, plenty of space for the number of people per room. The kitchen is a good size, and the free breakfasts a bonus within a city hostel!

We first got to Sydney and stayed in the Blue parrott, what a mistake! We eventually found this hostel after spending a day looking at hostels! The Harbour City felt more like a hotel, it is kept so clean. I agree it could do with a lick of paint here anD there. But it's great value for money and the showers are nice and powerful. Free breakfast is great, not just boring cornflakes, but a range of bread and jams and 3-4 types of cereal! The kitchen could be kept a bit cleaner, but its very smart. It's in a great location, very close to the botanical gardens. Its also NOT very noisy! My dad and younger sister came out to stay for 10days and they liked it.

This isn't the flashiest hostel but I'd definitely recommend it to anyone just wanting a place to stay. Staff are friendly and the rooms are fine. Nothing special but you're not backpacking because you want special accommodation. Couple of TV rooms which are good, and free breakfast is great as it saves you a nice bit of money. It could probably use a bit of a facelift and a lick of paint here and there to make it a bit more appealing, but look beyond that and it's a pretty good place to stay.

If you read about the hostel, you'll know exactly what you're getting. Its clean, the staff is attentive and will do their best to help you with whatever you need. you're paying for a place to sleep. harbour city gives you breakfast and, if you're an american, a brit, or any other native english speaker, an easy way to meet others like yourself. if you want the negatives, one morning there was no tp. thats it. i will return. don't miss wine and cheese wednesday.

when i first arrived i didn't get the best welcome but it turned out to be a pretty cool place. it wasn't the cleanest and newest hostel around and a bit smelly and could do with a major clean out. But the people are pretty friendly!

it is not the best place to go if you want to book on tours as quite a lot of people stay there long term so they are not too interested in the tour side of things!

you get free breakfast which is always a bonus. it deffinately got better the more i stayed there. in general not too bad and i'd stay there again but i think there are better hostels in sydney.

it is pretty close to the city and easy to walk to the harbour and shops which is cool and the price is pretty resonable.
