BUG Review
This hostel is probably a good choice if you are looking to party. It is large and offers loads of daily organised tours and events. Young travellers gather in the covered courtyard where there is a good free BBQ every Friday night. At check-in you are given 15 free drinks at various bars around town, and the pub crawl has a good reputation among guests. But if you want a clean or quiet room, it may not be all that great. The paint is peeling, the bathrooms are unclean, and it is noisy at night. Security is below par as well. The building needs a bit of work, but the party atmosphere and friendly staff help to make up for it.

Cons: No real common areas, no A/C, no fans

I was there from 25 Dec to 2 Jan (had to book 7 night min for holiday) the rooms were cramped and the bathroom pretty tiny. one room had to be fumigated when we were there because of bed bugs - one girl was coverd head to toe. No place to hang out except outdoor courtyard area.

This place seems to attract a friendly chilled out crowd. the kitchen is a bit small but they built an extra one while i was staying which helped. overall this was a nice hostel and i had a great time staying there.

I stayed here and I can honestly say I had the best time ever, in fact it was boss! I met so many great people and the manager Pete and his lovely lady Jo are great people who make you feel very welcome. Although I have to agree the kitchen is a bit on the small side, as Ellboy said, the BBQ makes up for it!

As for not getting a refund, that applies in most hostels. Pete and Jo help you find work and are very approachable. The hostel is very secure, door is coded of a night so only people staying there can get in and there is a security door which leads to the dorm rooms which is also locked in the day. The rooms have lockers and are safe.

Friday night is BBQ night and Pete and Jo lay on loads of free food and then take you down the pub and buy you a bevy! ;-) Free breakfast every morning, open air courtyard where you can chill and get to know people, dvd nights, communal TV, right in the middle of Kings Cross....in summary, I would recommend this hostel and would stay there again on my next visit to Oz. It's boss!

Guys thanks for making my stay thoroughly enjoyable!

It seems that people haven't been giving credit to Great Aussie Backpackers where it is deserved. Most of the people below have obviously have come over here on Mummy and Daddy's credit card and expect 5 star accomodation. I stayed there for 5 weeks and have enjoyed every minute of it. Arguably the kitchen is a little small, yet the BBQ makes up for it, as does the people who own it. They have helped me find a job, sorted my tax and been more than kind to me. The BBQ on Friday night is amazing, you get free beer afterwards, and there are things organised every night of the week to keep you amused. I spent a lot of time flyering around Kings Cross and most of the hostels are the same standard with cleanliness that's the way it goes with backpackers !!! I had no issues with cleanliness in Great Aussie Backpackers, haven't even had a problem with bedbugs.

In short - you get cheap rent, free breakfast, free bbq, free beer every night of the week, so a couple of dirty plates i was prepared to handle !!!! It seems that most people on this page are annoyed with the no refunds policy, my advice - get your trip sorted before you book ! The same applies to any hostel in Kings Cross incidentally.

The manager of this hostel is the rudest, most inconsiderate person I have encountered. The hostel is dirty, smells of mould everywhere. We moved to 3 different rooms throughout our stay and we were met with mould, bedbugs, cockroaches. The atmosphere is pretty average in this hostel and Peter, the manager, would be most responsible for that. He does not accept any sort of constructive criticism and he SHOULD, there are lots of improvements to be made at this hostel. Don't waste your money, go up the road there are many better places to stay.

Just had to put in my review because this place is much, much better than some of the other reviewers try to make you think. I found this hostel one of the most welcoming on my 3-month full loop Oz trip. It's all about having a good time here; and Peter is a great fellow who's always willing to help you out or give some advice. He's also one of the best BBQ chefs in Sydney, which he shows off every Friday night @ the free BBQ & beer night in the hostel!

I would not recomend anybody to stay at this hostel as it is crawling with begbugs and God knows what else. Whilst I spent 4 nights here I witnessed theft (from a room were only 4 close friend were sharing) and an outbreak of bedbugs. I personally in one night got covered from head to toe and was not offered any compensation ie a refund for one of my nights stay there. This hostel is rank and stinks of mould right thoughout and the kitchen is so small you couldn't even swing a mouse never mind a cat. I would recomend guests stay a little further up the street at the Original Backpackers were you hygiene needs and a clean hostel are guaranteed.

This hostel was ok at first apperance, then we got to know the staff and the bed bugs very well. The staff were rude especially the manager Peter, who was very obnoxious and i witnessed him make a predjudice comment towards a mentally handicapped person who was simply looking for somewhere cheap to stay. He also has no manners and when me and my boyfriend asked for a refund (as we booked 2 weeks in advance and our plans changed after 4 days) he simply told us to "turn around and read the sign" NO REFUNDS please be aware of this if you decide to book as this is not stated on their webpage. The begbug problem was rife and to our knowledge still is. My boyfriend was covered in them all over both legs and when we told the staff they did not seem at all suprised. I do understand that we are backpackers so we can not expect the Four Seasons but I and all the other guests we spoke to agreed that basic health and hygiene is not much to ask for. Please for your own sake do not stay at this hostel no matter how desperate you are. Pay the few $ extra you wont regret it. The rooms stunk of old damp and mould and the kitchen was around 1.5meters wide and bearly 2 meters long to accomodate for over 100 people and they only had 2 hobs working. Also the so called nice courtyard always had other guests dirty dishes all over the table and the TV and light have to go off at 10pm. I would not recomend this hostel to anybody and if I could I would have given it NO stars!!

After leaving the over priced and un-atmospheric 'Wake up' hostel i needed something a little more within my price range that would help me to experience genuine sydney life. The staff are friendly and were a great help in finding a job. It's a very clean hostel and the generall atmosphere is one where as a girl travelling on my own i felt very welcome. I made some great friends from all over the world and would make this hostel my first port of call when i come back to sydney. Try it, you'll like it!
