BUG Review
Set in a lovely old building with moulded ceilings and nice furnishings, this hostel offers quite a bit of charm. Dorm rooms are spacious with high ceilings and wood floors; some of them have their own balconies. All of them have their own television. Toilets are pretty standard and the kitchen is well stocked. The courtyard has a great atmosphere especially at night and when they have barbecues. It is a good place to chill out and meet people.

Hey I was at the original backpackers for two months and was only meant to be there for two weeks. The place is very clean now. you have cleaners cleaning the place in the morning and then in the afternoon and then the night manager cleans up the kitchen and courtyard at night. The staff are great as they are also backpackers themself so they know what you want and need. The dog is no-longer there......The rooms are reasonable clean but what do you expect from a backpackers......

Hostel's bathrooms clean, but rooms are only marginally cleaned once a week.. . Cleaning staff is incredibly rude, and desk staff is unhelpful. Inadequate laundry facilities and forced to share with annoying staff

Carpet in rooms are ratty. Bad sense of community, fairly unfriendly atmosphere

I got kicked out of my bed for being behind in my payment by one day. I know it's my fault, but most hostels warn you if you are behind in rent and are about to give your bed up....

i stayed at originals twice. the security is great, it is well lit with a locked door/gate and 24 hour reception. this quiet treelined back street street is mostly bistros and hostels. its easy to get to and very central. within 5 min walk is a cornershop, kings cross station, a supermarket, and ATM. it is walking distance from pitt st. shopping centre, and the gorgeous hyde park. the rooms are clean and comfortable. the kitchen is usually only as clean as the last person left it, but the staff does try to keep things clean. internet is slow and expensive, dont bother unless you are desperate. if you want sleep, dont stay in a street facing room,(esp on weekends) or a big 12+ person dorm(though that is common sense, eh?). the building is old and beautiful, and was used in an australian show called 'crash palace'. there is a very nice picnic/smoking area next to the kitchen, an open wooded courtyard. do your ATM business during the day, or up on the main road as it is well lit. the bathrooms are too few, and often a little dirty (they are in *constant* use). lockers in rooms. the guests and staff were very friendly. there is always the chance in any hostel you will get an obnoxious jerk in your room, i had one both times. i didnt complain, but i know if i had they would have done something.

so, if you dont require pristine restrooms(as long as you have shower shoes you should be fine), and absolute silence at all times, its a really good hostel. they have tons of info on tours and things at reception, and the front hall and facade is very nice and picturesque. if i go back to sydney i would stay there again.

Great place to stay, would recommend it to anyone. Very comfortable atmosphere, good location, rooms, beds, & people. My only complaint would be that it's too bad they don't have complimentary tea & coffee, just a vending maching (I think every hostel should offer those 2 things for free, they're so inexpensive to provide).

The hostel is in a nice old house and has a pretty good atmosphere. The kitchen was the best I have found in a non-YHA hostel. It was let down by the 6 bed dorm I was in - the bunks were really squeezed in - it was suitable for 4 really. Also the beds frames were much bigger than the matresses which were horrible plastic things, I kept waking up thinking I was falling off- ok sounds a bit trivial but if your bed's not good it's a problem every night. This hostel has a common problem - fridges in dorms, this leads to half eaten food in dorms, then you might as well put sign on the door saying "Sydney Cockroaches Welcome Here," and they had moved in to this dorm.

On the stange rules front - drinking was allowed in the courtyard, but not the TV room- don't know why, perhaps just the usual Australian penchant for making rules.

This hostel could be a lot better with some fairly simple imrovments.

We have made a booking before arriving. But we didn't got a room in the hostel. Without any comment we were brought to another hostel. It was called Bernly Private Hotel (www.bernlyprivatehotel.com). This one was a good choice. It was safely (thats very important in Kings Cross) and clean. The owners are friendly old people. And they have a nice rooftop where you can see Sydney Skyline.

It may have changed since I was there but anyway: The rooms had too many beds crammed in, the bathrooms were always dirty, in the morning you had to queue up just to clean your teeth as there were not enough bathrooms. One of the toilets did not even have a sink in it! The kitchen was pretty grim too. One of the worst places I stayed in the whole of Oz! (The atmosphere was the only good thing about it)

Excellent backyard where everybody gathers every evening. Funny people from all over the world, very friendly staff makes you feel at home away from home. I have to come back once I saved up enough money to come to Sydney again. Many hugs...Frank, Germany.
