BUG Review
This place is a bit out-dated but comfortable. The carpets are old and some of the fixtures are broken, and there is no real common area to hang out in. The kitchen is very minimal, and ends up doubling as a common room. There is a small courtyard in the back as well. Many of the guests are in Sydney for work, so it is not a very lively place. You must be buzzed into the front door, but there are no lockers. The hostel staff are sociable with the guests.

I like many other people moved into the Travellers Rest because it was the cheapest place to stay in Kings Cross. More than that, in our room we had more facilities than any other hostel that we stayed in!
All rooms have:
Their own fridge (so no one can streal ya food).
A TV
A phone (great for when my parents phoned from the UK)
A kettle and sink (for a cuppa)
And of course other things like fans and heaters (cos sydney does get cold in the winter!)
Most people that I met there had been staying there for periods of months rather than weeks. And a lot of them had jobs so there's no late night partying around this hostel (Night warden Bob sees to that!) You can actually have a propper nights sleep!
Derek the manager helped me out with loads of stuff. From sorting me out with my working visa to throwing jobs my way and helping me out when I bought a camper van! Thanks Derek!
I met so many great people while I was there, who I am still in contact with now. Great times in Sydney!! Thank You to the friends I made. Thanks Travellers Rest!

when we got to sydney we had a room booked in another hostel when got there they had given our room away!! after looking around we came across this little place in a quiet street behind the main st in kings cross. derek the owner was really helpful and friendly. we ended up staying a twin room for 1 month. had everything you could want in a room, decent size, a sink, some where to sit and a TV!! 1 min walk to train station into city and close to pubs and bars in kings cross. 3 min walk to supermarket. overall a really good hostel that I would highly recommend in kings cross.

Stayed here summer 2004. It's the cleanest hostel in the whole of Australia. Derek the owner is a star. He'll help you look for work and make you feel really welcome.

I've been staying here for three weeks soon looking for work. It's no party hostel since most backers are looking for work and there's very little social interaction between people since there's no common room and the kitchen is only open until 10.30 (told you it was for working backers;). On the other hand you get to know those who stay in your dorm really well!! (A common room would have given the extra star) A bit pricy, but not that expensive. The good side is* spacious dorms* fridge in the dorms* TV in the dorms (well, a necessity since there's no common room, but still...)* Friendly staff (one guy is a bit strange, but really friendly)* Lots of pots in the kitchen, even though it might be a bit crowded at dinner since there are only two stoves* Telephone for incoming calls in the dorm and answering machine in the reception if no one is there to take the call!! (Really great for those looking for work and don't have a mobile)* Your linen gets changed as soon as you ask for it aside from everyday cleaning. The toilet paper sucks, but I just bought a roll after muttering for a couple of days* Some dorms have shower and toilet in them.* Quite a lot of messages for different kinds of work. (Phoned me awake on a sunday morning just checking if I wanted to earn some quick money in a day)All in all a really neat and friendly hostel with lack of a common room.

I stayed here a few years ago, on and off for six months. Derek, the proprietor was not only friendly and helpful, but downright essential to the backpacker arriving with very little money, no contacts and no job. He got me work within two days! If you like a clean, friendly hostels, this is the one to go to in Sydney.

I have been back several times over the years to the Travellers Rest knowing that I can be close to the City and still be accommodated in clean, friendly surroundings with great staff whose main intent is to provide you with a secure 'home from home'.
