BUG Review
The Cavenagh is centred on a big swimming pool. It has two levels of accommodation that could be better maintained with a basic kitchen and shabby bathrooms. The accommodation contrasts sharply with the flash bar and restaurant that is complete with modern furniture, flat screen TVs and cheap beer-and-burger combos. There are also laundry facilities and internet access including Wi-Fi ($6 per hour, Global Gossip).

Had a terrible time, never staying here again, do not recommend it!!!, June 8, 2008
Reviewer: kblakeney from Dallas, TX, USA

Pros: Has a pool, bar, and okay restaurant, though expensive.
Cons: Rooms smelled, bad beds, filthy from other people, bad security, poor customer service.

I was very disappointed with the condition of this hostel. I stayed here with Adventure Tours on my way to Kakadu, and after one night, I promptly cancelled my reservation there for when I returned from the tour and booked elsewhere. Though it has a fun environment with a restaurant, bar, and pool, the rooms were filthy with beds that jabbed you in the back with springs. No air con and the fan was broken, plus, no outlets for charging devices. The girls already in our room had turned it into a pigsty. It was filthy, smelled, and there was no clean spot to put our luggage. When we approached the front desk with our problems, they shrugged it off, said they were booked, and sent us on our way. Very poor customer service, unimpressed, plus, it was loud all night long and the rooms were left unlocked by the other people staying constantly. Did not feel safe, had a terrible time, would not stay here again or recommend it to anyone I know.

I stayed in a four share room. The room was old and seemed dirty. The bathroom was functionnal but needed a scrub also and I saw a few bugs in there! The fridge in the room was nice. So was the airco (although very noisy unit). The room gave out to a shared walkway/balcony with a view on the hostel pool (which looked nice but I did not use). The Internet was good but closed early, at around 8pm. The staff were friendly but I was not given any information on where to find the kitchen (or if there was even one) or so. The location of the hostel is fine, near town, near a supermarket (Woolworths). Ok hostel, but I would not stay there again.

After it was not possible to make contact with this place via email, a direct phone call was made in an atempt to make a booking for 2 for 10 days. A gent in the reception answered where people could be heared shouting and screaming, he assured me that he could make the reservation but then just hung up. I instandly made a repeated call, this time answered by a lady, she just told me to ring back another day. We ended up going for 10 days to the Banyan where we been most happy.

this was a beautiful place. my room had two bunk beds, ensuite and fridge, with plenty of space for four people's luggage and junk. the pool area is lovely, really inviting. reception very helpful and friendly. all the other usual stuff, luggage storage, tv, kitchen. plus a really nice pub/club downstairs, with delicious food. not really on the cheap side though. only minor inconvenience was that it's a little further away from clubs and pubs than some hostels, but easy walking distance. thoroughly recommended. stayed september 2003.

The staff are very friendly and knowledgable. The restaurant/bar is good and fairly priced. I stayed in a single room and a motel room -- both were super clean and large. The pool was also clean and well-maintained.
