BUG Review
Darwin YHA is really an old motel-turned-hostel, with drive-in parking right outside the dorms. There are fridges in the rooms (another leftover from the motel-era), a swimming pool, and a good TV lounge. The excellent bar is the social centre of the hostel but the hostel isn't so lively when the bar is closed. Although the cleanliness is acceptable, the maintenance is below average, although the building is slowly undergoing a renovation. There are no lockers, which could be an issue for travellers with expensive gadgets.

Price
Dorm bed $33.50-37 ($30-33.50 HI/YHA) dry season; $21-24 ($18.50-21.50 HI/YHA) wet season
Double/twin room $87 ($83.50 HI/YHA) dry season; $62.50 ($56 HI/YHA) wetseason

Okay, but inferior to other options in Darwin, November 19, 2006

When I booked here I was expecting the old Central YHA (now the 'Youth Shack'), which I had heard good reviews of. Globetrotters YHA does not appear to be up to the same standard in terms of facility and location. Globetrotter is a few blocks down the road, further away from the centre of town. Rooms are ensuite and vary in size significantly even for the same number of beds. Rooms contained refrigerators. The kitchen was rather small but contained the standard facilities. There did not appear to be any common area or tv room other than the attached bar. The decor of the place gave it a rather dated feel. The pool was a reasonable size but probably not as big as the one at the former central YHA. Staff were generally helpful

Overall while there was nothing really bad about this hostel some of the other alternatives seemed better value for money in terms of cost, location and facilities.

The staff were friendly & helpful, the $5 meal a good deal to take advantage of, but the baggage storage room was tiny. Rooms were dark & quite small, but en suite which was a bonus. More of a stop off place before and after kakadu for most so thats probably why no one was overly matey, but it wasn't a bad place.

We liked the place a lot. The rooms are at 50$ for a double about the same price or cheaper than other places in Darwin. The staff was very helpful and got us a very good deal for a campervan rental. The bar is great and the 5$ dinner is very filling and includes a beer. There is allways a lot of life around the pool, but even if your room goes out to the pool it´s not to noisy. There is free parking around the building.

We paid $50 for a double room which was big, but a little drab. Bathroom wasn't cleaned when we got there but sheets were. The beer is cheap, you get a $5 coupon for a meal and a beer which wasn't too bad, and toast and jam is provided in the morning. Staff were nice, but other backpackers seemed pretty grumpy...Not the best place in Darwin, but not the worst either.

A crap hostel who is only looking out for itself - Punishes backpackers who do not book trips through them with a charge for bagage storage (a cupboard with bags packed to the roof!!. We had a room with 8 big enough for 4 - I didnt even have enough space to put my bag down in its own space!!

I loved Globetrotters Lodge to stay in and spend time in the bar getting to know other backpackers and locals. Now that the bar has been redone, the owners seem to have exelled themselves. a massive screen is now there for all the sports you can imagine. Appparently they are continuing to redo the back of the hostel as well. I am now living in Darwin locally and go there for a drink often as they are still the cheapest in town.
