BUG Review
Melaleuca on Mitchell is a new purpose-built hostel right in the hubbub of Mitchell Street's nightlife. It feels surprisingly worn around the edges for a building that's only a few years old, but it is still a top choice. Accommodation is in clean air-conditioned rooms with a locker for each bed but some travellers find the plastic mattresses a bit uncomfortable. The main focus of the hostel is the open-air common area upstairs that feature a bar, TV area, swimming pool and spa pool. There are also kitchen and laundry facilities. All things considered it is Darwin's best budget accommodation option.

This place is in a great location on Mitchell Street (though so are most of the hostels in Darwin). However that's where the good points end. There is 24/7 noise in the hostel, from a combination of the location, and the pool area where people tend to congregate. When I was there, my dormmates were also keen on returning in the wee small hours, putting the light on, having a chat, smoking in bed, etc. The bunks were exceptionally squeaky and were too low so if you were on the bottom bunk you'd keep banging your head on the upper one if you tried to sit up. Other irritations included a lift that required a swipe-card, a laundry in which the majority of the washing/drying machines were broken, slow Internet that had been locked down to the point where you couldn't really do anything except surf the web, and no aircon in the bathrooms. And the reception staff clearly didn't give two hoots about providing any sort of service. I wouldn't come back here again but, by Darwin standards, it was probably about average.

We stayed here before and after a kakadu trip in double rooms (1 ensuite) all lovely. Great facilities, nice pool and bar/communal areas. Lovely location very handy for shops, cafe's bus station etc. helpful staff. Only problem is they have plastic covered mattresses - very noisy and i'm sure worse in a dorm with everyone moving!
