The worst beds in Australia, August 15, 2007
Reviewer: anonymous2 from England

Pros: Lovely swimming pool, nice outdoor space
Cons: Dirty, dirty, dirty. Paper thin mattresses. Appalling kitchen facilities....and it all smells bad.

I stayed here for one night and it was more than enough.

The whole place is utterly filthy, from the internet room, through the bathrooms, stairways, dorms....don't even get me started on the 'open air' kitchen.

Their website suggests that they will pick you up from the airport...they won't. Also, the six bed dorms that they mention on their website turn out to have 8 beds stuffed in them. All the beds have their heads to the wall and the top bunks don't have rails around them, so you can fall out either side.

When I arrived, reception was due to close in 10 minutes. They insisted on a cash deposit for the key, rather than taking it from my eftpos card, or accepting my passport as security overnight (I was due to stay there three days). Their own ATM machine charged a lot, so I had to walk down to the bank. in the meantime, I wasn't allowed to leave my very heavy bag at reception so I carried that down too.

When I (finally) got up to my dorm room it absolutely stank. I accept that hostels can't force their guests to wash themselves or their clothes, but the floor was also filthy, peeling paint, tattered curtains etc. Covering my mattress was a grey mattress protector covered in pubic hair. The pillow was equally filthy - stained and reeking. To be fair, I was given clean ones when I asked for them.

The bathrooms have an open drain in the floor which I suppose accounts for the appalling smell in them. No loo paper in two of them, and no paper towels in any...meanwhile the open bins overflowed onto the floor.

The bed was the most uncomfortable I've ever slept in. A cheap foam mattress, so old that the slats of the bed have all but worn through in parts, and with a hole in the middle.

The free breakfast they offer is a tub of pancake mix, left in the filthy kitchen to stand out in the sun. Good luck finding a clean frying pan to cook one in...as for a fork to eat it with...well, there weren't any the morning I was there.

I think the way people treat a hostel says a lot about the hostel itself. Nobody bothers to clean up after themselves in this place because it is already so dirty. And there are signs up everywhere from people who've had stuff stolen from the kitchen or off the washing line.

The unfortunate thing is, with a lick of paint and a good clean, this hostel could be a really great place to stay. Unfortunately, while accomodation in Darwin is in such short supply, the owner of this place can clearly afford to let the hostel be disgusting....he'll still find someone to pay the $25 per night. One of the receptionists (who was extremely nice when I checked out) admitted as much when I told her I wanted to speak to the manager - she said people always complain about the dirt, but some people will just put up with it and the rest leave.

My advice....don't stay here unless you absolutely have to.

I only stayed here for one night (arriving late, leaving early) so I can't really comment on the facilities or atmosphere (I've left them as 3 so as to not skew the rating too much). The place is on Mitchell Street so is close to the action. The dorm only had a ceiling fan, which was struggling to cope with Darwin's heat and humidity.

I wouldn't stay here again unless I couldn't find a bed elsewhere.
