BUG Review
Youth Shack is a relatively good hostel that has a big kitchen, TV lounge, pool table and a big air-conditioned lobby with internet access including Wi-Fi ($6 per hour, Global Gossip Connect). There is also a nice swimming pool that attracts guests from the affiliated Chilli's Backpackers just up the road. Although the swimming pool area has the potential to be a sociable spot, the no-alcohol rule keeps a lid on the hostel's atmosphere.

I spent a week in this hostel and was glad to leave.

The Bathrooms were on their last legs and in need of a good clean, the kitchen fridges stank and were also in desperate need of replacing, the main part of the kitchen was also too small, The dorms are way too small for 4 beds and in mine the sink was in the way of anyone getting onto the top bunk. The Bin was too small for 4 people and was only empited when someone checked out, the air conditiong was inadequte, a $10 deposit was required for cultery, use of the internet was expensive. Reception staff were very unfriendly. In fact the whole place needs to be completly refurbished.

Only good points the clean bed linen and the location.

If this hostel was first on the list , the others wouldn't get much business.

I am 58 now but in 1997 I stayed there, hadn't stayed at a backpackers before, and I was scared.

Firstly I loved it that they picked me up at the airport, when I first arrived in my room, I thought , what have I done,? it was dark, [because the international travelers were still asleep of course].

But I had the best experience, I met so many travelers, all younger than me of course, but so friendly.

The bus services were great, food was cheap.

Bed was great, as was the airconditioning, I just loved everything about this place, especially the pool.

I went on down the west coast, oh that's right , what I loved was that Greyhound bus depot was right next door.

I stayed at Broome, Ningaloo Reef, Monkey Mia, Kalbarri, then Perth , and really I came home so fit, and so confident, so thanks to all the staff at all these institutions, who helped me out so much, I would recommend a trip like this for all you BABY BOOMERS like me, oh and my kids thought I was just great doing this all by myself on the GREYHOUND AUSSIE PASS,its the cheapest holiday and the best holiday I have ever had.

THE PEOPLE YOU MEET ON YOUR WAY are AWSOME but remember IT'S ALL IN YOUR ATTITUDE

Haven't even arrived at YHA Darwin but you can just tell the place is efficiently run.I'm arriving midnight by free shuttle from airport and 24 hr service at YHA has already sold me!Good intro to my top end holiday. What true blue Aussie hospitality is about.

I'm not a big fan generally of the YHA, as their hostels tend to be very formal with loads of rules, but this place is a good one, and better than a lot of the others in Darwin. Its got all the usual facilities, and the staff are good at sorting you out with tours and stuff and advice on local affairs. I did, however, seem to be affected by bed bugs there, and another guy in my dorm had the same experience, but I reckon we were maybe just unlucky.

This is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed in. Staff were friendly and helpful to everyone. Dorms were clean, beds comfortable and pool was great. Kitchen had everything I needed and plenty of storage space. Located right in the centre of Darwin, short walk to bus stops, nightlife and beaches. I would certainly stay there again.

Great hostel and location! the rooms are very clean and quiet. There is a good size pool and lots of deck chairs and an extra sun deck with more chairs! The kitchen as a large open/airy eating area. The kitchen itself is a bit small and short on utensils and cups. But everyone seems to clean up after thamselves so usually isn't a problem.

This YHA hostel is great, a nice big pool, sundeck, good aircon in the rooms etc. I moved here after doing a gondwana tour (one of the best things I've done in Oz) when the previous hostel I was staying in called Elke's wouldn't take me back for some reason!????

The hostel was in a good position, near interstate and local buses. The rooms have amazingly good air-conditioning (but make sure you get instructions on how to turn it down!). The open-air kitchen is usually very tidy, and the BBQ is a really great idea. The pool is a bonus, although small enough that in summer it feels like a lukewarm bath. Most tour buses pick up from outside the front door. You can also book most tours/trips that you want to do at the hostel's tourdesk.
