BUG Review
This is a potentially brilliant hostel with a great location. The accommodation is in large beautifully maintained wooden cabins in tropical gardens with winding pathways. Most dorms are air-conditioned with en suite bathrooms, but the beds are old and poorly-maintained so bed bugs have been known to infest them. The bathrooms are a hit or miss; some have been renovated, some have not. There is an internet café, a restaurant and a popular bar and nightclub on site which is always buzzing with activity. The tour desk has heaps of advice and they offer free accommodation when you book certain trips. The staff are for the most part friendlier than the other places. It is one of the best places to meet other backpackers, but security can be a problem as doors do not automatically lock and guests sometimes complain of theft.

A hostel with very poor security and rude staff, July 12, 2008

First impressions upon arrival were good, but looks can be deceiving! During the night someone let off a fire extinguisher under our door. As there is no security based at the hostel we had to call them from our mobile and we were told us that they couldn't do anything other than let us sleep in the kitchen. So we paid for a room we hardly slept in. After we returned from a sailing trip that we booked through the hostel a couple of days later the staff were rude when we tried to seek some sort of compensation for not being given an alternative room. I wouldn't go back here in a hurry!!!

the hostel is ok but you won't get a good nights sleep if you want it...but the bar rocks and will keep you drinking even when your clearly over the limit.

the sailing trip they organised on reality was the worst part.. the boat is old and not a proper sailing boat...didn't get the free dive as promised. the food is basic but dont expect to get a second serve...it wont happen...try a batter boat...AVOID REALITY EVERYBODY

We had a couple of nights here in Jan'07. we knew it was a big busy backpacker factory where you are a number not a name. It wasnt that bad, we were lucky to be in a double room as they are not as close to the bar and night-club like the dorms. The kitchen was'nt very good but they do have thier own cafe and a good selection of food to buy. I think if there's a group of you and you want to party, why not stay here? But if you need to be up early for a trip or tour then maybe look elcewhere. It wasnt the best hostel, but Ive been in worst! Bedbug sheets are needed in the dorms.

On arriving in Magnums a friendly male member of staff greeted us and was very helpful. We booked a sailing trip with them...which was brillent, however magnums totally ripped us off!! We paid $320 for the 2 days and 2 nights sailing and a free night in magnums, which seemed good. However on arriving aboard the sailing boat we soon realised that the rest of the group had obtained the same trip, plus two nights free accomodation PLUS the fraser island trip for $360-380!!! Did we feel ripped off or what?! We also were eager to get back to sydney on the wednesday, the day the trip ended but the availability of flights from prosphine airport was unsuitable. The kind girls at the reception on hearing that we may have to cancel the sailing trip as a result offered us help...then and only then...before that they were extremely passive!!! They found us flights from Hamilton island which were about $50 more expensive than the flights we were looking at, but we took them as we wanted to go sailing...$50 didn't seem that much. The girls carefully disguised the fact that it would cost an extra $50 to get to hamilton island...in fact doubling the cost of our transport to sydney...but what was worse was that these girls who work in a hostel, a place of information one would think told us blatant lies...according to them shute harbour was in walking distance..i'd like to see them walk out there...on top of that the informed us the the ferry out to hamilton island was only $20, in fact it was $90 for the two of us!!! Airle beach was fantastic..the sailing trip was unbeatable...Broomstick for anyone interested but Magnums was a disgrace...don't stay there!!

I stayed here a few times while livng in airlie beach. I was told to be expecting bedbugs, but I didn't even see one the whole time. Excelent bar, and great staff (some of who I'm still in contact with now- Rhi and Rach, you're stars!) Could have a better dj, but my opinion of him is based on personal reasons, not professional- Girls, if he hits on you, he actually has a girlfriend, he just won't tell you at the time.

I stopped in Magnums Nov 03 for a few days as I was seeking work in Airlie. The rooms were disgusting, the staff were useless and the bar, I have never been so petrified in my life of the regulars, avoid this place, Beaches was heaps better, but the rooms smelt of urine.

I had free nights in this hostel as part of a package. Apparently the people with 'free night' deals get the shitty $8 rooms at the front, yes the ones you walk past to get to the new complex at the back which is no doubt where the gleaming reviews of this sess pit of a hostel are coming from. The rooms were cramped, before I went sailing I stayed in one room, the room next door got broken into (one of many that got broken into while I was there), bare floors and walls, disgusting bath room. While lying on my bed talking to someone in my room, after 15 mins he got up to find about 10 bed bug bites going down his arm and back, he told the reception who didn't apologise or offer to move him, but instead sent a cleaner with a can of bug spray. Expect to pay for absolutly everything - including a rip off charge to store your bags, no bedding or pillows supplied at all, hense the bed bugs. Didn't mind the noise personally, didn't risk the nights entertainment either though!

The package I bought included 2 free nights at Magnums and this is the first rip-off. Because I wanted to stay one night before my sailing trip and one night afterwards. I had to pay a 8 Dollar "splitting charge". And this is what all is about in this hostel. The staff is most unfriendly and not helpful, you have to pay for everything: sheets, pillows, luggage storage. They refuse to help you with booking you greyhound seat (if you don't purchase the ticket with them) and the evening entertainment was worse than expected. Pubic humilation for a jug of beer? How poor is that?

Oh and you have to check-out at 10 am sharp, otherwise a late fee applies because they want to prepare the rooms for the next guest. As it happens I was the next guest and checked in at 4 pm and the dorm was disgusting, rubbish all over the place, half eaten pizza, dirty sheets on all beds etc.

The kitchen as described before - forget about it. Do yourself a favour and don't stay in this place!

We originally were staying at Koalas, we checked out first thing in the morning and came here. We love this place. We have a double and it is so nice. No bugs, totally clean. Little fridge and dish set. It is in the perfect area, totally central. You can party hard or just hang out in the room and still have it quiet. There isn't much for a kitchen but enough to make things work. The people that work here are nice and this place is huge so you can meet so many new people. We have been here for a week and have another week to go. That is how much we like it.
