BUG Review
This is the only hostel in Atherton but luckily it is a good one. It is in a beautifully kept old Queenslander house with wide verandas outside each dorm. The nice dorms have comfortable beds and the long hall has polished wooden floorboards and nice paintings. The bathrooms are clean and spacious and the excellent kitchen has dark paint, recessed lighting and new steel appliances. There is a cosy TV lounge with a huge log fireplace and a great pool table. The only problem is that there are mostly workers staying here, so there is not a big backpacker atmosphere. But it is a quiet, clean place to stay if you are in Atherton.

Struggling to find work in Cairns, Atherton was recommended to me by another backpacker. The hostel was is in very good condition, new stainless steel kitchen, clean rooms, good showers, t.v room with ample videos etc. There wasnt much security (rooms didnt have locks), but i still felt my belongings were safe. The owners are very fun and helpful guys who will find you work, and even drop you off and pick you up. I was given a job on a potato harvester which was easy compared to most fruit picking, and although long hours, paid some of the best money i got in Australia.

The nightlife in town isnt much to speak of, but ive seen worse, you can drink in the hostel so most people do which makes it easy to meet others, I made some great friends there. The surrounding enviroment is stunning, up in the mountains the are some awesome views to take in. I would advise hiring a car for a day to visit Millaa Millaa falls, which is just one of the many waterfalls in short driving distance. If your on a budget there is a mountain within walking distance, which offers great views.

So if your in Cairns looking for work, or just want to take a break from the hard partying and take in some scenery, i would highly recommend Atherton as a chilled workers hostel.
