BUG Review
This YHA is currently undergoing extensive remodelling and is poised to become one of the best hostels in Brisbane. By the time of publication it should have all brand new furnishings and fittings including a rooftop swimming pool and a bar/café. Half of it is done, and it is gorgeous. They have a travel desk specialising in northern Queensland and a games room with pool table. The modern dorms are all air conditioned spacious and clean, painted in pastels and muted browns. The atmosphere here is quiet, but plans to add a bar to the property and upgrade the café are underway and should liven the place up quite a bit.

Undergoing renovation & it needs it, December 30, 2006
Reviewer: zulu17 from london south west

Pros: Bedrooms & bathrooms good quality in front building
Cons: It is a building site

Undergoing renovations the hostel is OK for simply somewhere to sleep. Not a place I would relish spending any time in - communal area are drab and you never seem to escape from dull television programmes . Long way to kitchen from the front building. Information about local area and things to do is lacking.

OK hostel a little out of the way, December 29, 2006
Reviewer: Jabe from Saltburn, UK

Pros: Clean and in decent condition, spacious dorms
Cons: Stuffy rooms, not close to city centre

The dorms were spacious but the aircon clearly wasn't able to cope with the heat so I found it rather stuffy. Though it's not far to get to the station, it's about a 20 minute walk to get to the city centre. I probably wouldn't stay here again, but it was in the process of being refurbished when I was there so might be a better proposition once that's finished with.

Stayed in much better, but also stayed in worse, October 5, 2006
Reviewer: Rhian77 from Cardiff, Wales, UK

Pros: Location - close to the city but not too noisy.
Cons: A little tired, could do with updating.

I only stayed here for one night, and the hostel was fine for that length of time, but I'm sure there are better options in Brisbane. It could do with a face lift, and a few more PCs. The staff were friendly, and the atmosphere in the lounge was good - got chatting to some people. I wouldn't recommend this place though.

Stayed here in July and had great exper with staff being so helpful sharing local knowledge made getting around a breeze. Yeah its a big place with lota people there sometime so kitchen needs more maintaince but not bad comparing with some of the other hostels where its like out on the farm. Would recomend as is handy to most things but without having to lose sleep due to local action. We are going back in Nov and will try to get a room (definitly prefer the top half) as think its good value.

This was one of the worst hostels I stayed in on my trip. But thats not to say it was terrible. I found the dorms were quite spacious and the staff friendly and helpful. Bathrooms were like a big warehouse. It did have quite a few showers so you weren't likely to ever have to wait for one. I stayed in the older building I think, it just wasn't that great. I probably would check out other hostel reviews in Brisbane and stay somewhere else if i ever go to brisbane again.

Stayed for 2nts in March 05 and found it OK. Building is spilt and newer building where reception is better option. Stayed in 4bedded female dorm which was clean, but air con is freezing and passing trains can make it noisy.

Agree the place is bit souless and staff not great. Ideal for stopover and better option than hostels nearby.

situated 10mn walk from the transit centre (airport shuttle and others buses for the rest of queensland arrive and depart from there) and about 25 mn walk from the city centre.

rooms are clean, though a bit old fashion for some, often 4 beds-dorms which is a good size, showers and toilets are clean too and numerous enough, which is pretty rare for a YHA... kitchen at the ground floor is not really easy if you want to cook (the storage cupboards being right in the middle of it...) and there were not matches for the gas... but the dining part opens on the lounge and telly (and there is also another telly in a further corner for those who want to watch something else) and are clean!but if you don't want to cook, you can buy food from the small "bar". but didn't try it, so can't help you on this one! supermarkets are in the city centre (coles and safeway... but beware of the closing times! 6pm on sundays). there are also laundry facilities.

staff at reception is really friendly and gives you tips and maps and whatever information you want to know...

dorm bed is $21 for YHA members. you have to leave a $10 deposit for the key, and there is a door code at night for all the different buildings.

was in Brisbane for the jazz and blues festival and the valley festival... go for both!Brisbane is a great place to hang around (don't forget to go to Southbank!) and a good start to explore the rest of Queensland!

I stay here when I have to overnight in Brisbane. It's a good price, centrally located, clean and the reception staff are always friendly and helpful. The newer section is far better than the old section at the back. The kitchen is adequate and the Cafe at the front sells some reasonable food but is only open a few hours each day. It's difficult to find cafes and restaurants that are open after about 6pm in this part of Brisbane, - something which I always find annoying. Even the Transit Centre up the road has hardly anything open after 6pm!

The rooms are fine and have lockers for your stuff, (bring your own padlock or buy one from reception),but I agree with the comments about it being cold. Perhaps it's just me, but I always seem to end up sharing a room with people who have to have the air-conditioning and fan on full blast all through the night - and it's just too bloody cold! Especially if you are landed with the bed under the ceiling fan, or one infront of the air-con unit. Anyway, the hostel is quiet - which is basically why I choose to stay there....I just need a place to rest my head when I have to stay overnight in Brisbane before catching a flight or whatever. If you're looking for a party atmosphere - you need to look elsewhere.
