BUG Review
This flashy hostel offers an exceptional standard of accommodation. The exterior looks like a big cement block, but inside it is bright, comfortable and clean. Each of the five stories is themed with one of the natural elements. Dorms are a bit cramped, but have en suite and separate toilets and showers. The Birdie Num Num bar is a popular hotspot in town where people come to play pool, mingle, and hang out in some of the big round canvas huts. There is a lap pool and large spa with a retractable stage over it for live music nights, as well as a movie room with big plush pillows for seating. All of this combines to form a great atmosphere. Staff are friendly and the travel desk is helpful. It is a great place to stay near Chinatown and Brunswick Street.

Noisy and not worth the money, December 26, 2006
Reviewer: abismith24 from Leicester, England

Pros: Cheapish beer in their bar?
Cons: Ants & the noise of the bar til 5am on a weekend

The kitchen was small compared to the size of the hostel and not exactly clean. There aren't really any decent common areas to hang out apart from the bar. The pool looked skanky - we were there for several days and no one went near it.

If you get a room on the wrong side of the building, you get the joy of the sounds of the bar booming out dance music until 5am. Obviously they don't tell you this when you book. Our room was also full of ants.

Staff were unhelpful and really just seemed like they couldn't be arsed.

We left early without getting a refund for the night we didn't stay cos we hated it so much.

Find another Bunk....., June 21, 2006

No secure baggage storage for backbacks.

Rooms were dirty with a lot of ants. Very dark in rooms only one light bulb for main room.

Small kitchen for size of hostel, only two fridges, made me scared to cook there so we didn't.

Kitchen and TV room were seperated from main part of hostel.

4 blocks from Train Station, 1 block from Chinatown and 2 blocks from some pubs.

Onsuite, Airconed and met the best bunch of people! Totally awesome. Found staff perfectly friendly, great bar ($7 Jugs and $5 Meals - bring it!) and rooms great. It is a lively one, so if not the party type stay clear - otherwise go there and have the best time possible in Brisbane! Kitchen large and clean. Not sure what review further down is moaning about - place is clean and friendly and re car park behind - close the curtains dah! TV room is above the Bar/Nightclub so expect constant thud-thud-thud while enjoying your fav TV or movie - you can live withit though - and having a pool on sight is a small bonus - despite size - its rather nice in there.

My boyfriend and I stayed in a double room here. It was fine and clean, and the ensuite bathroom was clean to. Security access key card to get in your room, and after a certain time at night you had to use this to get in the main front door. Bar was good at night. The only problem was that we had a roach in our room on the last night, but as I have discovered travelling around oz they appear everywhere! The last time we were in Brisbane we stayed at Tinbilllys and that was amazing, we only booked Bunk because Tinbilly's was full, but Bunk was fine, and has a really good location in the Valley, great for nightlife and right next to Chinatown too.

One of the worst places we've stayed in 12mths on the road. Unfriendly, snotty reception staff who seem to consider guests an inconvenience; over-priced laundry and i/net locked down so much you can only open one window.

We paid extra for a 'private' room but were a tad miffed to find that the door didn't lock from the inside (although we did have an excellent view of the car park at the back. Eyeballing a commuter sat in thier car - about 3 meters away - as you get out of bed in the nip at 7am is truly an experience to behold!). This turned to seething fury when every morning of our stay the cleaners barged in, without knocking, to empty bins and clean the bathroom - even if we (me & boyfriend) were still in bed!

We were counting down the days 'till we could escape when we saw our lasting memory of Bunk - a sign on one of the dorm doors hand written to a guest from the cleaners and management telling them to stop leaving 'tiger stripes' in the dorm toilet as they didn't like cleaning the bogs - 'use the toilet brush - that's what it's there for'. Judging from the cleanliness of the public areas we were surprised that the cleaners were aware that any cleaning materials (other than bin-bags) exist.

A 'real charmer' of a hostel and despite the bar/club being very good, and the excellent location - never, ever again!

I stayed at bunk this month for approx 3 weeks. The room we had was great, own bathroom & fancy bunk beds with own lighting & big lockers. Unfortunately there are flats opposite with students in thst play bad elec guitar music til 3pm at night, bunk refused to do anyting & offer no refund policy.Additionally the bar goes on all night so there is never anyway of getting any sleep!

I stayed there on and off for about 3 and a half months, knew the staff and they knew me...beware though, majority of them r not very nice and dont really kno what they r doing...only Mike and Andrew have a clue in that place! Rooms r decent, en suite etc...get a 6 bed dorm tho. The bar Burdies is wicked, gets very busy on the weekends...probs 3rd best hostel i stayed in, to Wizard of Oz in Sydney and Gilligans in Cairns!

The Bunk Hostel was one of the best hostels by far I have stayed in in Oz!!It was so good I ended up living in it for 3 months.I always stayed in 4/6 bed dorms which were really spacious,en suite and excellent air conditioning. They also have good offers book 3 nights get the 4th free etc...Staff are very helpful and pleasant .It is also one of the few hostels that has an oven.

Birdy Nums Nums the bar attached to hostel also excellent.Thought it was very easy to meet people there have made some excellent friends there.

Nice enough hostel. Bar seems to be the focus point of this hostel. Bar is very very good and if you are wanting a party place than this is it! Rooms are not that nice though. Not cleaned very well at all and the rooms smell like morning breath all the time because you cannot open the windows at night because of the noise from the bar downstairs. Shower stinks as there is no ventilation. Bunks are very noisy and make a racket with the slightest movement. Staff seem very cold are are very Zoolanderish, camp and clicky. Again there focus seems to be on the bar rathur than running a hostel. No TV room but internet and laundry are great. Not a good place if you are on your own but with a group of friends this would be a great place to stay.

Bunk is definitely the best backpackers hostel I've stayed in, and I've stayed in a lot. It's very clean, excellent facilities, and the staff are brilliant, always helpfull and friendly. The bar, Birdee Num Num, is also excellent with great drinks promos and wicked DJs, and has fast become probably the most popular bar in The Valley.

If you're planning staying in Brisbane I would definitely recommend Bunk over anywhere else. And if you're not planning Brissy then change your plans...you'll be missing out on a whole heap of fun...Brisbane rocks!!!
