Like most of the hostels, they run their own 4v4 trips to Fraser Island and just a base... Not bad facilities...

Note their vehicals have the top feature of a hard enclosed top for luggage to piss off the nasty backpack nicking thieves on fraser island...

ALL the hostels are together on a residential street well out of town with beaches bar and pool down the road.

Little pool, Nice lounge.

NAF all to do in dead town bar whale watch and beaches bar.

We got there in dec 2004...It was already dark and it took us ages to find the place because the lass working there was totally drunk and forgot to switch on the lights of the sign... it took her quite longtime to check us in, she could barely speak and stand. The rooms were pretty crowded already, with cochroaches. And don't forget the bedbugs....

This place has blocks of 2 floor apartments, with about 15 people sharing a kitchen and a couple of bathrooms. It's pretty good for getting to know people and is reasonably clean and friendly. Considering most people have a very short stop in Hervey Bay on the way to Fraser Island, it's a pretty good option.

this place is a really nice big complex with units with about 6 four bed dorms in each one. the place has a really friendly vibe and i really had a great time there.

one problem though is i had expensive stuff stolen from my dorm 3 times and twice hostel workers stumbled drunk into the dorm in the early morning looking for a place for their surfy mates to crash for the night!, i went to the cops and they said the hostel has heaps of thefts and security is lax.

I'd reccomend staying there if you keep your valubles hidden as its a nice place.

i actually worked here for about a month after working at another hostel in the area, but i'll not be biast.

nice layout with some security issues but that was because people weren't locking doors behind them. that's all changed with self locking outer doors so things are better big time.

you find that most people are friendly here. staff provide entertainment nights with food, drink, videos and then the chance to continue the party at a couple of bars!

their package for fraser island is good also, and a real good way to meet other nationalities!

the rooms are clean, sometimes the sheets are put at the end of your beds rather than made, but they're there. and it's set out as 3 and 5 bed dorms or doubles.

the pool is great especially with a beer nearby.

the staff can be chatty but they get what you want done mostly.

give it a go!

This hostel was not built for the Olympics as I stayed there for 6 months in 1997 when it was called Olympus. It was, however, purpose-built as a backpacker hostel in about 1994 and is probably still one of the newest hostels in Hervey Bay. When I was there, it was considered to be one of the best hostels in Oz, and it's good to see things haven't changed!

Just a question - if the linen was dirty, why didn't you ask for clean? When I was there, all the linen was washed daily by the staff. The same goes for the equipment for Fraser - all equipment must be checked by staff regularly to adhere to health and safety and insurance standards - if it was 'defect' it should have been brought to the attention of the staff immediately.

I don't understand how anything can receive two excellent reviews and two dire reviews - I'm inclined to believe the good ones as these people obviously spent longer there!

Well, to start with Hervey Bay is not somewhere you want to be for long, let alone 4 months!

We had a pre-paid booking for here so had to stay but it took us an HOUR to be picked up from the bus station, and then the staff didn't even say hi or give us any information, just chatted to eachother and walked away from the bus when we got there. We were checked in with just as much cheer and found our way to our room. Accomodation is split into units with its own lounge and kitchen, but the beds were dirty and the mattresses so uncomfortable it was hard to sleep! Only one shower/sink per floor and ours seemed to be flooded!

I lived in Palace backpackers in the Bay for 4 months in 2002, all the staff are cool, their troopies for Fraser Island are the best there is, load of room compared to all the other cars you see over on the island. If you're going to stay anyway in the bay, stay at the Palace, tell them Charlie sent you!!

I stayed in Palace in November 2001 and it was the worst hostel I have seen in Oz. It is the newest hostel in Hervey Bay (built for the Olympic games). But it was disappointing. The linen were brown not white. The staff were indifferently. The tour equipment for Fraser was defect and dirty.

Don't go to Palace!!! Use the campground beachfront.
