BUG Review
Scotty's is known around town as the party hostel, even though it is located far from the bars and action of the town centre. It has a fun, happy atmosphere with brightly coloured wooden buildings and large decking in front set around an inviting swimming pool and nice gardens. The air-conditioned dorms are clean, but the bathrooms could do with a sprucing up and the kitchen is small and threadbare, but it does the trick. There is also a laundry, internet access (including Wi-Fi) and a tour desk. The management and staff are good humoured and helpful.

I'll definitely go back!, February 22, 2007
Reviewer: bukkakefran from Denbigh, North Wales

Pros: Great hostel, great staff, great atmosphere
Cons: I was woken up several nights by noisy guests

Firstly, the Scotty's bus meets all daytime Greyhound and Premier buses, and the Oz Experience drops you off at the door. When you arrive, you get told about all the facilities, and after checking in, you get your backpacks carried to your room by the staff. The first hostel I've ever stayed at where that has been part of the service!

All the rooms have locks or keypads, so they're all secure. The rooms are a little dark, but you don't come to Mission Beach to spend your time in your room! There is a well-equipped kitchen, free tea and coffee all morning, internet, TV room, video library, payphones, pool, hammocks, sun loungers, shop, laundry, all sorts! They can organise tours for you, and you get a discount.

They organise events, such as pizza and DVD night, BBQ night, and the bus to Coconutz bar in town. Scotty's own bar and grill are out front, with a cheaper backpacker menu (and smaller portions), and you get a drinks token with every meal purchased.

The nearest ATM, pharmacy, foodstore and tourism centre are a 15 minute walk away, or catch Scotty's bus, or the local bus also stops right out front.

This is one place I will definitely go back to. The staff are really helpful and pleasant, and there is a real community vibe to the place. In Mission Beach, you can go on rainforest walks, go skydiving, go to the beach, go to Dunk Island, or white-water rafting. But if any of that doesn't appeal, you can just chill by the pool at Scotty's, adn watch the boys bomb and back-flip into the pool.

if you like laid back this is the place to go!

Nice friendly staff - pick you up if your getting the greyhound bus.

We had a double room with on-suite which was newly painted but still a bit dated. The bathroom is well kept and we also had a fridge and a kettle in our room(they give you free tea, coffee, milk and sugar. We were a bit sad we didnt have a t.v in our room but we soon realised we didnt need one in Mission beach!

Outside each room is a verander - nice to sit out morning and night. The pool is in the middle of the beach houses so its very communal and welcoming.

The beach is just across the road from the hostel and i mean literally - its gorgeous! You can walk to the shops from the hostel (where the greyhound drops you off- takes about 10-15 minutes).

The kitchen is fairly big and new (clean) - the utensils are quite old but they work! They have internet/payphones and a t.v room. There is a tour desk too and a little shop in the reception of the hostel (milk/ice creams/crisps - u name it they have it).

Behind the hostel is a bar and grill, (it not noisy).

I would go back tomorrow if i could !

AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE, August 14, 2006

This is the WORST hostel we stayed in, in Queensland. Accommodation with attitude, stroppy management were determined to convince us that there were no alternatives to Scottys bus, Scottys bar, Scottys bed bugs! The whole place was filthy with dead flies moulded to our toilet and a kitchen suitable for an environmental health warning. Miles away from the nearest bars and restaurants it was a 15 min walk just to the local shop. If you've only just left home and still need someone to change your nappies this place might do but otherwise I'd reccommend giving it a WIDE berth!

There wasn't a lot to do in Mission Beach after the Cyclones tore through. This was basically just a stop before hitting Cairns. I know most people want to know about the rooms. They're fine; the beds were comfortable.

One of the best things about this place is the restaurant. Had my first taste of kangaroo here. No, it doesn't taste like chicken. It's more like a fine grade of beef. I really enjoyed it and think that even non-adventurous palates would really enjoy this with the delectable mash. Our driver said that the chef was THE guy to go to for grilled 'roo. He was certainly right. Loved it and I wasn't expecting to rave over it.

There are lots of places to chill at the hostel. Loved the hammocks where one could sit or dangle one's feet.

Top little hostel right by the beach, an older style hostel with old fashioned friendliness, the people who run it are honest and try hard to make you feel welcome, if your looking to chill and also have a party this is the place best of both worlds, good value

There was lots of friendly australians in australia but not here.

Not even the english who worked here had the muscles to form a smile.

Personality challenged galore. Crammed rooms, crap beds and no privacy in the double rooms it was like having an audience. Don't do it go to the YHA or the Tree House or sleep under a boat if needs must.

It is situated no where near any facilities like the town centre.

The friendliest backpackers I encountered in Oz. Clean rooms, good facilities, clean and decent sized pool with lots of games, the friendliest staff and live-in locals possible, and a good value bar with plenty of entertainment. I got to Cairns and turned back. Had a great time guys - thanks.

I don't know what everyone else is raving about. I agree that the staff was very helpful, but I must say that it is the only hostel in which I saw so many people leave with bed bugs. Needless to say, we only needed to stay one night.

Scotty's dorms need a serious re-furb, there are blankets and boxes seperating one dorm from the staff area's and the dorm doors have no locks and are rarely closed which means the hostels cats and dogs are regular visitors to you bunks through the night!!!!

But don't let that put you off staying here the staff are great if not a little OTT at times and the whole place has a real chilled out atmoshere, they also have cable TV and a huge video collection!!!

One of the coolest & friendliest hostels I have ever stayed in! Mel on the desk is an absolute hoot - and she is so friendly and makes you feel at home to boot. Scotty's has a great feel to the place & the guys that work there are all really friendly. Rooms are spotless & the bed really comfy to sleep in - what more could a traveller ask for...hot showers? Absolutely - heavenly bliss. Thanks guys - I will be back!!!!
