BUG Review
Gagaju boasts a rustic bush setting on six acres with accommodation in big tents. Facilities include a TV/video room, book exchange, a games room with table tennis, darts and a pool table, a gym, volleyball court and an outdoor kitchen with barbecues. Activities include didgeridoo making workshops and canoe trips and guests have free use of fishing rods. It is in a natural bush setting on the banks of the Noosa River, about 15km from Noosa. There's a good chance of seeing wildlife here.
Price Dorm bed $15 Double room $35 Camping $10 Prices are in Australian dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.
Pros:
Staying in a wilderness type location
Cons:
Rather untidy and poorly kept kitchen facilities.

A unique setting within a forested area between the Noosa River and adjacent billabong, some distance from nearest township.Gagaju is a bush camp with basic but serviceable kitchen and showering facilities but an evening around the camp fire and again basic but comfortable enough rustic bunks is an enjoyable experience well worth having if something different is what you are looking for.

Despite the slight irrations of mosquitos and bush toilets Gagaju remains in my view the greatest place to escape to. As soon as i arrived it felt like home. And every time i left i could not wait to return and catch up with all the friends that i made. I came for a few days and ended up staying 3 months. It is so refreshing to meet relaxed.. if a little crazy.. staff who arent trying to sell you a hundred different tours. They are just up for fun times and letting you relax and be yourself in some of the most beautiful surroundings in Australia. There is nothing better then waking up to a swim in the noosa river and going to bed to the sounds of the forest and the ocean. All in all an awesome time to be had.

Were the previous reviewers staying in the same place as me? I can do primitive but i do object to a dog eating off the same barbecue as we are supposed to cook and damp, dirty sheets with pubic hair still on them. I checked out the website a minute ago and, believe me, you will not recognise the kithchen and TV room if you make the mistake of staying there. Yes, the tea and coffee are free but do you want to drink out of a chipped jam jar? Most of the people there were stoned which is the only way to cope with it. I will concede that the scenery is beautiful but Australia is a beautiful country. Call me anal but I appreciate a view more if my first thought in the morning is not that i might have scabies. Nobody that knows me would describe me as a hygiene freak but think of the worst student house you were ever in and multiply it by a hundred. Not cheap either - at least Dick Turpin wore a mask.

gagaju is indeed rustic. we went during a rainy period though, so the mud everywhere was unavoidable and i had over twenty mossie bites in a day. bring along some form insect repellent, it could help. don't expect very sanitary conditions for the toilets, gagaju is too far away from modernities. but i'll never forget the aching beautiful rainbow i saw while canoeing in the drizzling rain.

I booked a canoeing trip to Noosa Everglades (a must to see also!) which included two nights in Gagaju. Two nights turned into ten. Friendly staff and people, excellent atmosphere. An unconventional place for unconventional travellers. If you are travelling the East Coast, don't miss this one. Definitely one of the highlights on my trip in Oz.

Gagaju is the best place I stayed on the east coast, better than the arts factory, better even than the superb beach shack of mission beach. If u are a chilled out person looking for somewhere v v freindly to stay that is different in all the best possible ways to any other hostel this place is a must. I would be gutted if I'd never been there, it made my whole trip to Oz a thousand times better. So get to Gagaju and enjoy it... I'd love to be able to go back there every day!

I was only ment to be there for one night, it was over a week before I eventualluy left and that's a short stay by everyone else's standards. Gagaju is so relaxed and informal, it's easy to loose the person you thought was you and find the chilled out, easy going person inside. The dorms are camp style and cool (who needs air con?) and the tv room holds over 150 films (too many?). The nightly Caine toad races are a great meeting point and the campfire and 'fire twirling' displays are fantastic. The camp fire food is good value as is the hostel in general. The staff are friendly and helpful and eco-aware, so never scream in the middle of the night because of a spider or bug or you may have to endure a 10 minute talk on how bad a ten minute talk is compared to a little harmless bug....you have been warned!Deffinately for the ralexed or those wishing to relax (who knew backpacking could be so stressfull?) Just sit back and enjoy.

It's so nice to find a rustic refuge away from the tour sales obsessed hostels all along the northern east coast. The bushcamp is right along a beautiful river and there are bonfires nightly. The camp is environmentally friendly and the common areas make it very simple to meet others to go on canoe trips with. They have a funky bus that does pickups from the bus station and goes on alcohol runs for guests. Pete the owner has big plans for this place, even though I think it'll be dificult to improve on what they already have as it's so special.
