BUG Review
This hostel is in the old Ascot Hotel, a blue corner building with a huge elephant on the front - you can't miss it - and it says a bit about the character of the place. The hostel part is definitely aging, but well cared for by the owners, who are the most generous and kind hostel owners we've met. The dorms are spacious and the kitchen is well stocked. Downstairs is a bar, a bottle shop, slot machines and a restaurant serving the best steak in town (some say in Australia). It is north of the centre, but near lots of shops, and they will arrange buses wherever you need to go. They also help to find jobs in the area. It's an inexpensive and homely spot worth an overnight on your way north.

The hostel itself is OK, and the owners extremely friendly, but it's a 20-25 minute walk from the town centre, which is plain inconvenient. There's a fair amount of road noise at night so light sleepers might not find it appealing. I was also a little irritated by the constant plugs for tours run by Capricorn Dave. I wouldn't stay here again simply because of the location (and stayed at Downtown Backpackers at the Oxford Hotel the second time I was in Rockhampton).

Ascot picked us up at the bus stop and took us to the hostel, which isn't in the middle of town. It is a bit of a walk to the main area. The only plus about the hostel is the owner, Capricorn Dave, who never wears shoes and is quite a character and seems like a nice guy. However, the rooms are quite dingy and a little musty. The sheets are old and they might be clean, but they don't really look like it. The reception is downstairs at the bar, and there were many times when people could not find anyone. One girl had to leave early the next morning and couldn't find anyone to giver her back her key deposit, so she had to put the key in an envelope and ask him to send her the money in a letter. Then, some guys came to the hostel sort of late and couldn't find anyone to check them in! They sat and watched TV and they were still there when I went to bed because no one was around. That was really annoying to everyone! It was a little too laid back for me. Also, our bus left the next day at midnight. So we checked out and paid an extra $3 to leave our bags there and use the bathrooms, etc. But this only lasted until 6pm, then the owner told us we had to LEAVE! We were just sitting there watching TV! Since when does a hostel kick you out just because your bus leaves late??? Fortunately he was going to a rodeo so he took us with him and then to the bus station. I wouldn't stay there again.

***EDITED TO COMPLY WITH BUG'S REVIEW GUIDELINES***, we only stayed there because the yha double booked us. it is in the sticks and u hav to get a taxi or walk because ***EDITED TO COMPLY WITH BUG'S REVIEW GUIDELINES***! Our bus was not until 00.30 and ***EDITED TO COMPLY WITH BUG'S REVIEW GUIDELINES*** threw us out at 21.30 accusing us of being American and wanting everything, Id rather sleep in the park with ***EDITED TO COMPLY WITH BUG'S REVIEW GUIDELINES*** before stayin there again, what a S*** HOLE!

I really enjoy my stay in Ascot, the room is clean. It is like a home. The most important is that the host is very friendly, I felt they really care about me, helped me to solve my problems, I did not see any consideration like this in other backpackers. Will and Dave, they are very good host and guide,stay there and then you will enjoy their services!

Hallo, meine Lieben. Wenn ihr je nach Rockhampton kommt, kommt hierher. Alle sind wahnsinnig nett, sowohl das Personal unten in der Bar, als auch Dave, der fuer das Hostel zustaendig ist. Sie haben uns viel geholfen, sich um Arbeit fuer uns gekuemmert, und wenn wir abends weggehen wollten, haben wir meistens einen Lift bekommen. Wir hatten eine tolle Zeit hier, die Clubs sind besonders Mittwochs und am Wochenende ziemlich gut. Alles in allem habe ich mich hier fuer 3 Wochen wirklich zuhause gefuehlt und werde es vermissen. Ich kann es nur weiterempfehlen. Die Zimmer sind definitiv nicht schmutzig, manche haben Klimaanlage, ueberzeugt euch einfach selbst, Toni

We have stayed at the Ascot backpackers for 3 weeks and have had a wonderful time. The people are very friendly and will do what they can to help you to have a great time. The place does need a lick of paint, but it is clean and comfortable. I recommend a Wednesday night or weekend in Rocky, they are brilliant and if you want to go on any trips around the area you can book them at the Ascot. We really enjoyed our time at the Ascot and Rockhampton and recommend it to anyone. Rockhampton Rocks!!!!!

Look if your looking for a cheap room with great service this is the place to go. It has a pub downstairs and also a restaurant with the BEST STEAKS you will ever find guaranteed, or it's free.(as long as you don't eat it all.) the service there is fantastic, from everyone. It's relaxed and easy going. Fair enough it might not look that great from the outside but it's worth it.

the 'hostel' is above a grubby pub, it has small rooms that are not cleaned at all and the kitchen is basically made up of a fridge and a sandwitch toaster! we stayed here for 2 nights whist looking around for the best deal to great keppel island. I will help you out right now! we ended up booking the trip from the yha and if you stay there you will get discount.... DOH! Dont stay in rockhampton if you can help it but if you do, stay at the yha. the ascot is horrid, although the guy who runs it is sound.
