BUG Review
Downtown Backpackers is located above the bar of the Oxford Hotel. The dorms are plain white with new carpets and mattresses. Bathrooms are showing their age, as the showers are mouldy and the paint is chipping. The kitchen is very small with one big wooden table in the middle and it leads into the common room with one couch, a big TV, and internet kiosks. It has a great location, but not much of a backpacker atmosphere.

Price
Dorm bed $20

Good hostel in centre of town, January 3, 2007

I don't think there was anyone else staying there when I did, hence the low atmosphere score. The place is also above a pub but, even on a Saturday night, I didn't notice much noise filtering up. I only stayed for one night and it did the job - would stay here again in the unlikely event I'm in Rockhampton again.

Nice clean hostel. Good kitchen and tv room, which has comfy seating. Bedrooms are also very clean, and the beds are comfortable too. There is no reception office though, which resulted in having to check in at the downstairs bar, and check out at the cafe which was next to the hostel. Good to stay at for a night or too, but no longer.

Only stayed here for a night and that was enough. It was clean and tidy and it has the basic facitlites that you'd look for: internet; kitchen; tv room; tour information and the like. Nearly all the rooms have just two beds in them but $19.50 a night is a good price to pay for a double room. It is above a bar so its pretty noisy at the weekend and there is no actual reception in the hostel- we had to check in in the bar and check out at the cafe next door in the morning. Its basic and does the job for those passing through Rockhampton on the road to elsewhere but I wouldn't like to stay there for any length of time.

I stayed here before going to The Great Keppel Island and I am glad I did. The manager guy is really friendly and kind. They also offer a really good deal for a 3 day 2 night trip to The Great Keppel Islands- includes: 2 nights at the YHA on Great Keppel Island, Rtn ferry crossing, rtn coach to ferry port and 1 nights accommodation at Downtown Backpackers for $120!

Well worth doing this deal! Because I was on the Oz Experience my bus wasn't coming till the afternoon so I went to the backpackers and asked if I could dump my bag somewhere and the manager gave me a key so I could freshern up and use the facilities which was really cool.

This is the best hostel in Rockhampton don't think about staying anywhere esle. The location of the hostel couldn't be better - right in the centre of Rockhampton not like the YHA which is 10 mins out of the centre.

This is a pretty nice place. Its just a pub with a backpackers above. Its a pretty quiet Pub and Cafe so its not too noisey at night and its modern, clean and comfortable and i had only two beds in my room. The kitchen is badly understocked with only two pots (bring your own can opener too!). The lounge is really nice and homey, a good size T.V and a phone and net terminal. The service is really quite bad though. Although they're friendly don't expect them to pick you up if you arrive in Rocky late at night. I had to pick up my key up from the mobil service station where i arrived at midnight and find my own way to the hostel. Not great for a girl travelling on her own. Dont expect them to remember youre coming either, when i got there a girl had been told she could check in (about 11:30ish pm) and everything was closed so she was stuck outside with nowhere to sleep and it was just good luck someone was coming out of the hostel and let her in. I let her stay in my room so she could have a bed. Lots of renovation taking place so it'll probably look even nicer soon too.

Wasn't sure on what we would get here but was very suprised how nice it really was. Very central in town. Dorms and bathrooms were very clean (Female bathrooms are brand new!!) The kitchen is well equipped and looks just like a normal UK kicthcen and the common room is comfatable with Tv and Internet. Although the Pub is open to 1am on weekends we didn't hear a thing!!
