We stayed in a double bed room for 3 nights, let us list down our comments!-Dusty & cheap atmosphereRoom with colourful (purple, green, yellow & red) walls, a window, 3 colours curtains, a regular double bed, an A4 size mirror & 2 ugly racks hanging on the wall, and an unforgettable old dusty fan. -Unhygienic kitchen area Spoilt & smelly fridge & be careful ur stuffs can be stolen. Badly stained & dirty tables, oven & microwave, yucksss.-Poor management systemFake, unfriendly, insincere & un-dedicated staffs, very busy with themselves. They must have a very low pay.-Cramped dirty bathroomsFew broken taps, leaking water & insufficient hot water supply. Plus two small toilets, what a shame!-You can't use hairdryer in your own room. Gotta go to the designated bathroom wherein only 1 power supply available.Overall, it might not even a 1 star backpackers hotel. We've definitely had better!

This place was in a word pretty sterile. Its very clean and functional but not a lot of character at all. Its in a good place near the beach but no where near the town. We got picked up by two girls who looked a lot worse for wear! The pub next door on a sunday night is deafening so be prepared to either join in or for lots and lots of noise!!

I stayed here three years ago and again just last week. The place is currently undergoing a renovation and deserves alot more credit than it has received. The staff are friendly, the rooms and bathrooms are clean and there is now good security. The first time I stayed here it was pretty shocking but now the place is much better. The distance from Surfers isn't a problem because they run a shuttle bus service or you can catch the local bus just across the road. This place definitely deserves better reviews than it has received before.

The location of this place may as well be in London itself, its so far out of town you may need to budget in for a light aircraft to get into surfers each day however position to the beach and sea world is fantastic. If you wanna party then try their pub next door for 20 bucks they will take you on a bus with people from two other backpacker hostels to several pubs around surfers with complementry drinks. As far as the staff goes theres nothing worse than a well tanned seedy surfy British guy so after checking in try to avoid the office at all costs, anyway all in all unless you have a car or several pairs of shoes dont bother with this place save your money and sleap in the street!

British arms is new, but IMHO, poorly run. The front desk guys and gals do their best, but the place is poorly designed. A good hostel, such as YHA Brisbane, has a large reception area (not a poky little window), a big, clean kitchen, open early for those wanting to get away early, and a tourist info area along with an internet facility which is not set in front of the main door. All these exist at BA YHA in one large room, kitchen open at 0700 or later, office at 0800. A few cockroach baits would come in handy, and drying towels should be used for plates, not wiping down bars and benches.Cleaning staff seem to be lodgers needing some money, and I doubt they've had any training. Cheery and helpful, but apparently lacking decent cleaning gear.TV room is gloomy, and drinking and after hours activity outside bedrooms should be monitored - not ignored. The free bus service is excellent, and it's only a short trip to town and the supermarkets, cheaper restaurants. The Backpackers' staff at the bus terminal advised that only non-Australians can stay at most of the hostels, British Arms being the exception. Seems that Aussies drink too much, and of course, others don't!The costs shown seem to be out of date. Brisbane was cheaper.Summary: I wouldn't return.

Very slack cleaners. The bathroom had been dirty all the time in my one week stay here. Male toilets upstairs are pretty disgusting. Pisses everywhere, very very pissy smell, the seat is not in place, once the toilet paper was not replaced. Kitchen has got some cockroaches.. fridge is not clean. It is in one room with reception desk and internet.. which is not open till 7 am or 7.30 or later if the cleaners are sleepy and drunk. The staff needs more training, especially in cleaning and maintaining rooms. This hostel will be very embarrassed if it is compared to Brisbane City YHA.. very great management, very clean, deserves 4 stars. British Arms has got a long way to go to deserve 2 stars.

From the courtesy bus that picked me up from the transit centre, straight to the reception desk where i was not only greeted like an old friend, i was booked inand given a run down of the complete nights activities! All the staff were really friendly and more than willing to help out even when they weren't working. This helped to create an open, friendly atmosphere that made everyone want to talk and socialise during the day, and go out and party hard all night, every night!!During the day i also took full advantage of the FREE hire of body boards, but there were also surf boards (for the more experienced), mountain bikes and fishing rods (i actually watched people catching fish from the marina, no more than 20m from the hostel). Definately a must go place!!

Please do not believe the old reviews - they are out of date and do not reflect the British Arms Backpacker Resort as it is now. It is now a great place to stay!New management have renovated, addressed all previous complaints and have a rigorous bug management program - NO BUGS THERE! The new owner, Ross and Manager, Richie are fantastic blokes who are totally customer focussed, meaning they are both helpful and quick to solve any service or other issues so everyone has the best time they can.Located on a marina with the beach on one side and boats on the other, this hostel has special deals so backpackers can enjoy the facilities and venues at Mariners Cove and Marina Mirage. The new Fisherman's Wharf Tavern is a bonus - awesome Sunday Sessions and the owner loves backpackers so much that there are heaps of special deals (like free beer or wine with meals and the Monday night keg just for us).The free courtesy bus, free bicycles and the staff's willingness to help mean you can party in Surfers, but get a good nights sleep away from the noise. Personally, I really can't understand the people who say it is too far from town - especially when there is a free bus. We caught a cab back one night and it only cost $2 each.Every person I met in the 2 weeks I stayed there reckoned it was the best hostel they had visited, not only because of all the free stuff (boogie boards, fishing rods, bikes, sausage sizzles, tea/coffee, etc, etc) but because of the location and great party atmosphere - the staff are all ragers who really go out of their way to help. They have a great website that says it all, and I've actually seen the Guest Book where the comments came from. www.britisharms.com.auAnyway, I've stayed at plenty of other backpacker resorts but never one as friendly and party orientated as the British Arms. I just hope bug updates their review, as it is just not right.
