BUG Review
Gold Coast International Backpackers Resort has a very institutional feel. The cramped dorms all have en suite bathrooms, but the showers are quite dirty. The kitchen is greasy and old, and the common room is dull and boring. Most rooms have balconies, some with views of the beach and the hostel has a great location, but the facilities here are very poor.

Dorm bed $25-30
Double/twin room $70

This place looked modern and clean on the outside (and from the internet site) but once u get closer....its bad..! I stayed there recently with a friend and never will we go there ever again..! The kitchen is a no go zone, it smells rank and dirty. The fridge isnt actually a fridge, because it doesnt work. We had to throw food out because it didnt stay cool. We found hairs in our bed, before we used them, no toilet paper in the ensuite, and rooms were quite dirty. It seems that the owners/managers etc dont bother spending much money cleaning or maintaining this place ! There were people hanging around the front entrance (nearly all the time) getting drunk and left a pigsty every morning....the staff arent exactly friendly either, rather plain. Quite simply...DONT ever stay at this place.....its not worth your hard earned cash...!!

The website for this hostel is extremely inaccurate. From the front it looks like a decent place and as with many hostels, the reception, bar, lounge, ourtdoor area were fairly clean and promising. Then you reach the kitchen. The smell alone should warn you off ever using it before you even reach the filthy worktops and piles of unwashed dishes.

Despite advising arrival time at midday, we were told by our obviously hungover and moody desk staff, that our room was not ready due to 'party people sleeping in... ha ha.' Not impressed. After 20 minutes we were given our room but our linen, we were told, was 'just in the dryer' and would be ready shortly. Not so. 8 hours later and after countless ignored requests, we managed to get 4 sheets... no top sheets, no pillowcases. We were offered damp pillowcases being told they were 'near enough'.

Our room was cramped, the matresses and carpet filthy and the bathroom not properly cleaned. Cockroaches were spotted and killed.

This hostel has rules posted absolutely everywhere... not so bad if they are actually followed, least of all by the staff. Despite the''no alcohol" and "no noise after 10pm" rules, the evening events were so out of control that police were contacted to calm the group. This was not normal hostel revelry, these people were blocking the entrance to the building, making other guests pick their way between them and piles of empty bottles. I have no doubt the level of music and noise would have been disturbing guests of the other hotels in the street.

The final night we stayed, as the staff were partaking in the loud, abrasive behaviour (one guy actually attacked a bystander with a glass bottle) the owner was called. He arrived quickly and dismissed a number of guests in a manner that led to mind the yelling and screaming at 'Fawlty Towers'. I had two 17 year olds with me who were intimidated by all this.

Overall, this hostel would rate as one of my all time worst. The filth, the prison cell rooms and the apathetic attitudes of the staff made this a stay I would rather forget.

When my friends and I got there everything seemed fine to start but after we checked in the rooms were small, the linnen was dirty, the beds smelled and creaked which meant an unpleasant sleep which we did alot of because we had already paid and there was nothing to do, we went looking for a party at their bar but no one was there apart from a few bums i dont know who wrote the other reports saying that its a party so we hooked up with some people from another hostel and found out that they join up with all of the other hostels in surfers paradise apart from this one so we went there, much better. This place needs a facelift. Its not what the ads say.

All in all Not Fun!

I saw an advert for this place in TNT magzine and it was advertised as "brand new and modern". Well, it is new in name only (it used to be Mardi Gras Backpackers) and I couldn't see anything else that looked remotely new or modern - in fact everything looked like it could do with a big face lift. The corridors were dark and dingy. Our double room was small and shabby. We stayed one night and checked out first thing the next morning. We found a great place called the Silver Sands Motel just around the corner - for only $6 extra night it was like a palace in comparison! Funnily enough the owner of the Silver Sands said they get plenty of business from people fleeing the Gold Coast Int Backpackers!

This is not the best hostel in Surfers, but it's really good. It's close to the beach, the rooms are small, but nice and there's a bathroom, balcony and TV.

Sure, the kitchen is small and only open between 8 and 22, but the place is quiet and nice.

The staff, facilities, and activities made our stay at this hostel fantastic. It was easy to feel welcome and the night life that the staff provided was superb. Free enty into some of the nightclubs and a general feeling of being in good hands made our stay enjoyable. I highly recomend staying at Gold Coast International Backpackers Resort.

i stayed at this hostel for 3 weeks and once i got to know the manager he took me to the best surf ive seen in australia, well... the surf was good but i was hungover from the pub crawl the night before that the manager"adam " takes everone on and its cheap too!!! (which is always good!) after the surfing adam cooked up a hell good bbq for everyone and we sat back and attempted to drink the bar dry while we checked out the seletion of movies the hostel shows on the big screen(and the popcorn was pretty damn good too!!), all in all this place is great, the rooms are clean and well maintained, and theres plenty of things to do , i would definately recommend it to anyone who likes to feel at home when they travel, the manager is well informed and works very hard to try to keep everone happy, im definately going back

Do not stay here, seriously.

This is the most pathetic hostel I have ever stayed at. Apart from the mildew on the curtains, the mould on the walls (which the absolutely idiotic staff, brushed off, and left all over our sheets), the mould in the bathroom, the wrenching stink of mould as you walked into the room, it wasn't that bad.

I never cooked a single meal in that disgusting kitchen, it was revolting.

I can't believe the high ratings it got before I went there, it must have taken a dive since then.

COMPLETE DUMP - STAY AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE TO AVOID THE SMELL.

Stayed there for a week. The location was perfect! Short walk from cavill av, seconds from the beach! However the room was abit too small, and had poor ventilation- air-con installation in each room would be perfect(fan was just not enough!)! Very peaceful in the morning, except the sound from the construction area in front of the hostel. Common room was abit messy; but Disco the puppy was so cute! Overall, i would say the hostel was just OK for the price of $140/week.

In relation to good points this place is within 5 mins walking distance from cavill ave, one block from the beach and right next to some restaurants. A thai restaurant is just around the corner. Noise was kept to a minimum which was okay because i am a light sleeper! There is ensuites in most rooms and when i stayed there 1 yr ago it wasnt that messy. Oh and there is locks on most rooms, the one i stayed in had bunks which were almost falling apart but were okay for the few hrs sleep that i needed after a big nite!

Bad points: there was construction starting across the road on some building which started rather early. Did not meet any other fellow travellers as i was not in the hostel most of the time, no view from balcony (except old roof of restaurant). There is also nowhere to store your gear in your rooms and being there in the height of summer it was a stinking hot morning and we had only a tiny fan to cool 4 people down.

All in all, great place to stay if only staying for a night or two.
