Central, but old and tired, May 18, 2007
Reviewer: lorkers from UK

Pros: A very short walk to all the main clubs
Cons: Rather grubby, with little atmosphere or chances to meet people

This is a pretty neat hostel if you plan to go clubbing a lot. It's right in the thick of things, opposite the Hard Rock Cafe, and 5 minutes from the beach.

It is in an old 1960s hotel that hasn't been renovated - hence the rooms are "quaint" and "chinzy", but the rooms come with fridges, TV, telephones and - almost uniquely for a backpackers - room service! they are clean - ish - but clearly 40 years of wear and tear hasn't done them any favours.

The pool is tiny, but good. It is however overlooked by the bar. The bar is a bit dull, with a lot of old men in it, and there are better options nearby.

However there are major problems with the staff: They really seem to hate backpackers, and will do anything to avoid being helpful to them. Also beware - I paid with a UK credit card, and my bill was automatically transfered into GBP at a ruinious exchange rate, without asking me if I'd like to pay in AUD. CHECK your visa card slips!

This hostel is in the best spot - so handy to everything.

It's pretty grotty though - and the pool - which would be great - is overlooked by a cheap casino/gaming bar, so you get all the scum of Surfers watching you swim! We even had a beer bottle thrown at us!!

However our room had air-con - although it was a noisy to run! And it had an ensuite bathroom and tv which was nice. You don't really get a chance to mingle with everyone else - so it's not a social hostel.

I have traveled to 4 different continents and stayed in various hostels and this definifitely rates as one of the worst.

We only stayed for a night, since we had already paid, and then checked out early morning to return to the bus depot next door to find another place to stay. The girl at the reception desk wasn't surprised, as it was apparent that others had similar requests.

I think it's the only hostel I've been in where I actually saw bugs. Yuck.

This place was actually a hotel, but it did have a common room and kitchen area. The pool and spa area was lovely, and we had our own double room with air con, balcony fridge and TV which was great! The kitchen was pretty bad though - very ill equipped. They charge you $10 for a cup, plates and cutlery and have no other stuff in the kitchen apart from pots and pans. Very hard to cook so had to eat out! Staff could have been nicer, but it was definitely worth the price! Would definitely stay here again.

I found this place pretty good, its right next to bus station, 2 minutes from the beach and you get a voucher for a free meal in the nice brew-pub next door. You have access to all the hotel facilities which is great - spa and pool in particular! - and the rooms have fridges, TV and en-suite bathroom. Found them pretty clean. Only downside is there is no real atmosphere or place for backpackers to meet (I didn't actually realise there was a kitchen!)

A brilliant hostel, one of the best up the East Coast, November 25, 2003

I stayed in the Islander back in July and it was brilliant, having stayed in the awful Arts Factory in Byron Bay this reinstored my faith in hostels. It is like staying in a hotel, with rooms spacious with tv, fridge, plenty of storage space, your own locker and bathroom. We shared with two girls and a guy and from there on in travelled with this group of people because in rooms that size you really get the chance to meet and get to know your fellow travellers. It was a truly brilliant hostel and I would recommend anyone to stay there. It is extremely central, staff are very friendly even on the hotel reception and the pool and spa are lovely. There is also tennis courts, squash courts, a gym and games room. You would be mad not to avail of this hostel on your trip up the East Coast. Also they write you a lovely email after your stay wishing you all the best on your travels and ensuring you had a pleasant stay with them!

It really feels like staying at a hotel but paying hostel rate. The only tradeoff is the absence of aircon. Walk 1 block to the beach, the center of Surfers is just outside. We checked out Mardi Gras on Hamilton Avenue but gravely disappointed with the double room there (very small and quite difficult to breath). So we thought it's a good thing we chose Islander. The price difference is definitely worth it. We got big double room with nice ensuite bathroom, TV, fridge and free tea/coffee. Too bad being a backpacker means lots of youngsters shouting and hollering from the balcony to girls on the street. Nice pool area, which is about the only communal spot. Big thanks to the general manager who helped us deal with some problems with Daves Car Rental.

Was great being within 5 minutes to main shopping area, beach, busstops, restaurants and bars, especially with sunset being before 6pm. Had a dorm bed for $22 a night (with 4 party hard brits who were on an 11am-4am timezone!), and a twin share with a friend for $60 a night. Both rooms were large, had a fridge, TV, ensuite with awesome shower and a balcony with good view of pool and spa. Islander also had tennis and squash courts and a sauna. No real communal scene and crockery had to be rented for $10 - at least was clean. Internet available only until 4pm. Was grateful for the left luggage facility. Staff friendly and curteous, all in all had a great stay.
