Unfriendly, dirty, no atmosphere, expensive internet connection. Not the worst hostel I've ever been in, but certainly not one I would go back to.

I stayed in this place recently having chosen it on the basis of good reviews here and in Lonely Planet. The people who own it are incredibly unfriendly and treat everyone who walks in simply as a source of cash. No friendly greetings and we were treated like a nuisance. The whole place looks like a prison - long corridors and bleak and the rooms are filthy - the shower in the bathroom looked like it had never been cleaned. This place is best avoided.

Lovely place to stay - the owners are really friendly & make you feel at home. Rooms are clean, all linen supplied, airconditioned & the security is good. This place is really busy, so I would recommend that you book in advance if you want to get in!

New owners 6 weeks ago are very friendly and knowledgeable. Good facilities with clean toilets and kitchen. Cheap, fast internet and 5min from town. Probably not for the party animal which is great if you like some peace and quite now and again

No toilet paper!, December 5, 2001

The air conditioning was a true treat, but the lack of toilet paper (between 6 women!) was appalling. There was also a dead cockroach that stayed on the floor of the shower room for a couple of days, ants crawling in and out of it (it IS the tropics, after all) even after the room had been attended to (and the toilet paper fiasco remedied). The folks that run the place were super nice though and had no problem running me and a friend down to the rock pool and chatting on the deck was no problem.

It's not for party animals - kinda quiet but in a good way. The rooms are clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful. A good place to chill while exploring Townsville.
